Mumbai broker says non-vegetarians can’t buy this ₹6.5 crore flat, internet reacts

Mumbai broker says non-vegetarians can’t buy this ₹6.5 crore flat, internet reacts

A property reel in Mumbai has kicked off a fresh argument over something that has been a sensitive subject in the city for years: who gets to buy or live in a home based on what they eat.The controversy began after real estate broker Bhavesh Kaware shared a video advertising a flat in Tardeo. In the reel, he said the property was open only to vegetarian buyers and that people who eat non-vegetarian food would not be considered. The video quickly spread online, drawing criticism from political leaders and social media users. The issue has also revived the long-running debate around so-called “pure vegetarian” housing in Mumbai, where food preferences have sometimes become part of decisions about who can rent or buy a home.

    What did the broker say?

In the video, Kaware was promoting a 2 BHK flat in Tardeo with a reported carpet area of around 900 sq ft. He quoted a price of ₹6.5 crore and then added the condition that only vegetarian buyers would be considered.“If you are a pure vegetarian, call…,” he said while describing the property, adding that people who eat non-vegetarian food would not get the house. The wording immediately drew attention because the restriction wasn’t presented simply as a preference for the property. It was framed as a condition for the potential buyer.Kaware has since reportedly offered an explanation, saying the requirement came from the flat owner, who follows the Warkari tradition. That clarification, however, hasn’t stopped the debate.

    Political leaders react

The video has also brought political reactions in Maharashtra.Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar criticised the remarks and said the broker should be traced and action taken. The issue was also raised by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, who questioned whether simply expressing anger over the incident was enough and called for action.MNS leader Yashwant Killedar also reacted strongly, warning that the party would respond in what he described as the “MNS style.”The political response has added another layer to an argument that is already playing out heavily online.

Mumbai has seen this debate before

For Mumbai, the controversy isn’t entirely new.Over the years, there have been repeated reports and allegations of people being denied housing because of their food habits, community or other personal preferences. Similar disputes have surfaced in parts of the city including Ghatkopar, Mulund and Chandivali. The issue tends to become especially heated because housing isn’t exactly a casual purchase in Mumbai. With property prices so high and demand for homes intense, being told that your food choices could determine whether you’re eligible for a particular home can feel like a much bigger issue than simply being rejected for a rental. It also raises an awkward question: where does a housing society’s right to set its own rules end, and where does discrimination begin?

    The ‘pure veg’ building debate

Mumbai has long had residential buildings marketed or known as “pure vegetarian” societies. For some residents, these restrictions are about maintaining a particular lifestyle and living environment.Critics see it differently. They argue that what someone eats shouldn’t determine whether they can own a home, particularly in a city as diverse as Mumbai. A person’s kitchen habits, they say, shouldn’t become a test for whether they belong in a neighbourhood or residential building. And that is why the Tardeo video has struck such a nerve. The argument isn’t really about whether someone prefers vegetarian or non-vegetarian food. It’s about whether that preference should follow a person into the housing market.

Celebrities have spoken about housing discrimination too

The debate has also reached Bollywood in the past.Actor Saif Ali Khan has previously spoken about difficulties he said he faced while looking for a home in Mumbai after marrying Kareena Kapoor Khan in 2012, claiming that some housing societies turned him away.Emraan Hashmi also spoke about a housing dispute in 2014, saying a reputed society had rejected his application. Those incidents added celebrity visibility to a problem that many ordinary home seekers have also discussed over the years.

A property reel has reopened an old argument

For now, the Tardeo controversy remains centred on a viral video and the reaction it has triggered. But the bigger question isn’t going away.Mumbai is home to people with wildly different religions, communities, languages and food habits. In such a city, should the contents of someone’s dinner plate have anything to do with their chances of owning a home? The answer depends on whom you ask.But one thing is clear: a short property reel has once again pushed Mumbai’s “pure veg” housing debate straight into the spotlight.
