TOI Corrrespondent from Washington: Before police found his mother and younger brother dead inside their quiet suburban home in Acton, outside Boston, 17-year-old Arjun Aravind had allegedly been exploring a dark world online – using the internet and ChatGPT to search for ideas and create fictional scenarios about killing his own family.That revelation, disclosed by local District Attorney Marian Ryan, has transformed an already horrific double homicide into a case with an unsettling 21st-century dimension: the intersection of troubled youth and digital conversations on tap in the age of artificial intelligence.Aravind is accused of killing his mother, Sudha Venkatesan, 45, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, at their home on Tuesday. He faces two counts of murder, along with assault and battery and motor-vehicle charges. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf on Thursday, and he was ordered held without bail while undergoing a mental-health evaluation after he was brought to the court in handcuffs and leg shackles.Ryan said Aravind had recently displayed “concerning behavior,” including using the internet and ChatGPT to develop “theoretical ideas or fantasy stories regarding the killing of his family.” She disclosed he had created what appeared to be Gothic-novel-style stories, asking questions and creating characters whose circumstances seemed connected to threats against his family.Police were summoned after Aravind’s father Sukumaran could not reach his family and a tutor arriving for a scheduled appointment could not get into the house. Officers found Siddharth on the first floor and his mother in the basement, both dead with trauma injuries after signs of struggle. Aravind allegedly fled in his mother’s Honda Accord and was found inside the car in neighboring Wayland early Wednesday when he was arrested without incident.The case is particularly jarring for Indian-American families because such killings remain rare, although there is a haunting precedent in the Washington area. In March 2005, Jayant Kadian, then a 20-year-old college student, killed his mother, Kiran Kadian – whose husband Rajesh Kadian, a strategic affairs commentator, was a familiar figure in think-tank circles in the Capital – at the family’s Virginia home. Kiran was stabbed repeatedly while preparing food. Jayant later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 20-year prison sentence.There is no credible national database showing how frequently matricide or patricide occurs specifically among Indian-Americans. National research shows that parricide – a child killing a parent – itself is relatively rare; a major study found matricide constitutes less than 2 percent of US homicides in which the victim-offender relationship is known.But what makes the Acton case especially alarming is that investigators have encountered something previous generations of cops and prosecutors could scarcely have imagined: an alleged killer leaving behind conversations with a machine about violent fantasies. That matters because young people are increasingly turning to AI for advice and emotional support.A recent study found that one in eight adolescents and young adults reported using generative AI for mental-health advice. Researchers have warned that current AI safety evaluations may miss dangers arising in real-world interactions with vulnerable youth. At the same time, social-media companies face scores of lawsuits alleging that their platforms can contribute to harmful effects on young people, allegations the companies dispute.In the Acton killings, however, the technological debate is secondary for now to a family and community tragedy. As Ryan put it, the community and the school system were entering “a very dark and long process.”
