    Hockey World Cup: India hold England to goalless draw, seal second-round spot in dramatic finish

    NEW DELHI: India secured their place in the second round of the Women’s Hockey World Cup after holding England to a tense 0-0 draw in their final Pool D match on Thursday, surviving a late onslaught to finish second in the group.The result took India’s tally to five points from three matches, enough to secure progression behind pool winners China. China topped the group with seven points after two wins and a draw, while England finished on four points and were eliminated.As it happened: India vs England, Hockey World CupIndia had opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw against China before producing a stunning 6-1 victory over South Africa. However, they were forced to spend long periods defending as England pushed desperately for the win they needed to stay alive.The final moments provided the biggest test, with India goalkeeper Bichu Devi producing a stunning save to deny Tessa Howard a decisive goal in the dying seconds.

    England pile on pressure, India stand firm

    India made the brighter start and dominated the opening 10 minutes, earning three penalty corners but failing to convert any of them. England gradually grew into the contest and began putting India under sustained pressure.The second quarter belonged largely to England, who earned three penalty corners compared to India’s one. Both goalkeepers made important saves as the contest remained goalless at halftime.India’s attacking threat diminished as the match progressed, with the team increasingly dropping deep and relying on a compact defensive structure. England continued to probe around the Indian circle but repeatedly found the route to goal blocked.The pressure intensified after the break. England dominated the third quarter and earned five penalty corners, while India managed only one. Yet the Indian defence continued to absorb the pressure, with Bichu Devi and experienced goalkeeper Savita Punia making crucial interventions.England ultimately earned 12 penalty corners to India’s six across the match but could not convert a single one.

    England remove goalkeeper, India survive late scare

    Knowing that only victory would take them through, England threw caution to the wind in the final quarter. They removed their goalkeeper and flooded the Indian circle with 11 outfield players, creating a frantic finish.India were forced to defend almost entirely inside their own half as England searched for the goal that would keep their World Cup campaign alive. The Indian defence continued to block shots and disrupt England’s attacking combinations.Then came the decisive moment in the dying seconds. Howard found an opportunity to win the match, but Bichu Devi produced a stunning save to keep England out and preserve India’s qualification.The final whistle brought immense relief for the Indians. England had dominated large periods of the match, particularly after the opening 10 minutes, but their inability to convert their numerous penalty corners ultimately proved costly.India now move into the second round with their unbeaten record intact, having collected two draws and one win. China join them from Pool D, while England’s campaign ends despite their sustained pressure and 12 penalty corners.
