He was 23 when his business failure led to debt and jail: What his story reveals about starting over
From running a business to facing debt and jail at 23: His story prompting a conversation about second chances. (AI Image)

A 23-year-old Indian man’s anonymous Reddit post about debt, a failed business, a criminal case, time in jail and his struggle to rebuild his life has triggered a wider conversation about failure, financial responsibility and second chances at a young age.The young entrepreneur, who said he once ran an influencer marketing agency called Social Adda, wrote that his life changed dramatically between the ages of 20 and 23. While the claims in the post could not be independently verified, his candid account drew responses from Reddit users who shared their own experiences of business failures, unemployment and mental health struggles, while urging him not to see his current situation as the end of his life.

From building a business to mounting debt

According to the Reddit post, the user was already dealing with significant financial responsibilities at the age of 20, while many others his age were focused on college, relationships or their first jobs.He eventually began working in influencer marketing before starting his own agency. For a period, he said, the business appeared to be growing, with work involving brands, creators and other agencies. However, he acknowledged that he made financial and business mistakes along the way. A dispute with a company he had worked with later escalated into a criminal case, with the company allegedly accusing him of serious financial wrongdoing. The Reddit user maintained that he had his own version of the events and felt that some facts had been presented differently from his experience. At the same time, he did not claim to be entirely blameless.“I made mistakes. I accept that,” he wrote, adding that he never imagined those decisions would eventually lead to his arrest and more than a month in jail.

    The burden on his family

One of the most difficult aspects of the situation, according to the post, was its impact on his family. The business entity, he wrote, had been registered in his mother’s name, despite her having limited understanding of business and legal matters. As the case progressed, his family reportedly faced legal, financial and emotional pressure. The family also had to take a loan of around Rs 5 lakh against their home, according to the user, to deal with the situation.“I keep thinking that I was supposed to make their lives better,” he wrote. “Instead, at 23, I’ve brought them into debt, courtrooms, police stations and fear.”

Trying to rebuild while dealing with debt and a legal case

After receiving bail, the young man hoped to begin rebuilding his career. But he said the criminal case was still ongoing and that he continued to face outstanding financial liabilities. He wrote that another agency was owed around Rs 3.8 lakh, although he had already made some payments and intended to repay the remaining amount. His plan, he said, was to earn again and gradually clear his debts rather than make promises he could not fulfil. The experience, however, has also affected his mental well-being. The user wrote that he had been dealing with depression, anxiety and panic attacks, alongside health concerns, and often worried about his parents, finances, career and future.

Reddit users offer perspective on failure and starting again

Several users responded with messages of support. One commenter, who identified himself as 32 and unemployed, told the 23-year-old that he still had time to rebuild. Another user who had experienced two unsuccessful businesses suggested assessing the financial situation carefully, considering a long-term repayment plan and focusing on career and health stability. The responses also reflected a broader message: professional failure in one’s twenties does not necessarily define an entire life. The original poster himself appeared to recognise this. He said he did not want sympathy or to blame others entirely for what had happened. Instead, he wanted to accept the consequences of his actions, resolve the legal and financial issues, rebuild his career and eventually support his parents. His question to fellow Reddit users was simple but significant: after losing money, a business, reputation or years of their lives to difficult circumstances, how did they start again? For students and young professionals navigating the pressure to succeed early, the discussion offers a reminder that failure, however serious its consequences may be, can also force a reassessment of responsibility, financial decisions and the meaning of a second chance.Disclaimer: This article is based on an anonymous Reddit post and comments shared by users on the platform.
