What is the scholarship that awards students for playing games? Roehampton’s esports scheme puts gaming on the university balance sheet
University pays students to play video games: How Roehampton’s esports scholarship is rewriting the rules of student funding

What if there could be a scholarship for playing games? Ta-da! Wish granted. The University of Roehampton in the UK is offering esports scholarships to students who can demonstrate excellence in competitive gaming while keeping their academic performance on track. The unusual scholarship comes at a time when the cost of going to university is weighing heavily on students and families. As tuition, accommodation, and everyday expenses continue to put pressure on household budgets, financial assistance can make the difference between studying comfortably and taking on additional work to stay afloat.According to a BBC report, millions of pounds in scholarships and bursary support go unclaimed every year because students often do not know what financial assistance they are eligible for. Roehampton’s esports scholarship is one of the more unconventional examples of the funding available to students.

Gaming is no longer just a pastime

Esports, short for electronic sports, refers to organised competitive video gaming. Unlike casual gaming, esports is built around competition, spectators, structured tournaments, and professional-level performance.Players compete individually or as teams in major titles, with tournaments offering prizes, trophies, and, increasingly, career opportunities. The sector has developed into a serious competitive ecosystem, with universities also beginning to recognise gaming as an activity that can attract talented students.Roehampton has been among the institutions pushing that idea into higher education. The university’s scholarship is available to both undergraduate and postgraduate students who can demonstrate gaming ability while maintaining satisfactory academic progress.Scholars are expected to take part in weekly university competitions and represent Roehampton at events held outside the campus. The arrangement effectively places gaming alongside other university activities that demand commitment, discipline, and performance.

How does the Roehampton esports scholarship work?

The scholarship is not simply handed to anyone who plays video games regularly. Applicants are expected to meet minimum rankings in major competitive games. However, Roehampton also considers candidates who fall close to the required ranking if they satisfy other aspects of the selection criteria. A substantial following on streaming platforms such as Twitch can, for example, strengthen an application. The university’s registrar, Mark Ellul, told the BBC that the scholarship was intended to recognise talent in a field whose popularity is growing internationally as well as among students. That distinction is important. The scheme is not presenting gaming as an excuse to avoid academic responsibilities. Instead, it attempts to recognise competitive gaming as a skill that can coexist with university education.

From £1,500 to £2,000: How the scheme grew

Roehampton initially offered a scholarship worth £1,500. According to the BBC report, the amount was subsequently increased to £2,000 following the strong performance and growing popularity of the university’s esports team. That is perhaps the strongest argument for scholarships of this kind. For students already struggling to balance lectures, assignments and living expenses, removing the need for additional paid work can create more time for both academic and extracurricular commitments.

The real challenge: Can gaming and academics coexist?

The obvious question is whether competitive gaming could undermine the very academic goals universities are supposed to promote.Esports at a competitive level is not casual entertainment. Regular tournaments, practice schedules, team commitments and travel can consume substantial amounts of time. For a student, that workload has to sit alongside lectures, examinations, coursework and independent study.Roehampton’s model attempts to address that tension directly by requiring scholars to maintain academic progress. The principle is straightforward: gaming excellence cannot come at the expense of education. His argument goes beyond gaming. If a student receives financial support for demonstrating excellence in an activity they already pursue seriously, the additional funding could reduce stress and allow them to concentrate more fully on their studies. That is the broader question universities may increasingly have to confront: should scholarships be limited to traditional measures of achievement, or should institutions recognise talent in emerging fields as well?

Students may be missing out on money they are entitled to seek

The esports scholarship also exposes a much larger problem in student finance: awareness. That is a serious gap.Students often approach university finance with a narrow understanding of what support is available. They think of loans, grants or conventional academic scholarships, while overlooking awards linked to sport, music, leadership, community work, particular subjects or other specialist achievements. The result can be money left untouched while students borrow more or take on additional work. The lesson from Roehampton is therefore not merely that universities are willing to pay students for gaming. It is that students should investigate every legitimate source of financial support before assuming that loans and family contributions are their only options.
