Lionel Richie was hospitalized after his August 29 concert at The Muny in St Louis

Music icon Lionel Richie has been hospitalized in St Louis, Missouri, following his performance at The Muny over the weekend, with doctors reportedly examining whether dehydration may have contributed to his condition. The 77-year-old singer checked himself into a local hospital after his Saturday night performance to undergo medical tests and was treated in the intensive care unit, according to TMZ. The publication reported that Richie went to the hospital as a precaution and that doctors were looking into possible slight dehydration. TMZ also reported that the singer was hoping to be discharged on Tuesday. The Muny confirms that Richie performed at its annual summer-finale concert in Forest Park on August 29.Richie’s representative had not publicly commented on his condition at the time of publication.

Lionel Richie reportedly struggled during final song

The hospitalization came after concertgoers reportedly noticed that Richie appeared to be struggling toward the end of Saturday night’s performance.According to TMZ, Richie needed a chair during his closing performance of his iconic hit “All Night Long”. The singer reportedly completed the song while seated, prompting concern among fans.People also reported that Richie was hospitalized as a precaution following the St Louis performance and that his current health status had not been officially confirmed. The latest episode has drawn additional attention because Richie experienced another health scare during a concert in Minnesota in June.

Latest health scare follows St Paul incident

On June 24, Richie cut short a performance at Grand Casino Arena in St Paul, Minnesota, after becoming unwell on stage.TMZ reported at the time that Richie told the audience he was feeling “dizzy” and “strange” before taking a seat during the performance. He eventually left the stage, and the concert was canceled. The Minnesota concert was part of Richie’s joint Sing A Song All Night Long tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.According to reports from the period, Richie repeatedly sat down while performing “Dancing On The Ceiling” before the show was brought to an early end.His saxophonist, Dino Soldo, subsequently informed the audience that Richie was not feeling well and would not be able to continue.

Richie later returned to the stage

Following the June health scare, Richie postponed two performances on doctors’ advice before returning to the stage.TMZ reported in July that Richie resumed his Sing A Song All Night Long tour in Pittsburgh and later shared a health update with fans, saying he was doing well and thanking them for their support.People also reported that Richie resumed touring after the June incident and had continued performing before his latest St Louis hospitalization.

    Doctors reportedly investigating dehydration

According to TMZ’s August 31 report, doctors in St Louis are investigating possible slight dehydration as a potential explanation for Richie’s latest health issue. The publication said Richie checked himself into the hospital voluntarily and was being cautious. At present, there is no publicly confirmed diagnosis explaining why Richie required hospital treatment. His representative had not issued a public statement regarding his condition, and it remains unclear whether the hospitalization will affect his upcoming performances.

Richie’s demanding career has raised concerns

Richie’s latest health scare has also renewed attention on the demanding schedule he has maintained throughout his decades-long career. The singer rose to fame as a member of The Commodores in the 1970s before embarking on an enormously successful solo career. He has remained an active performer while also serving as a judge on American Idol. His best-known songs include “Hello”, “All Night Long” and “Dancing On The Ceiling”, while his 1983 album Can’t Slow Down remains one of the defining records of his career.Following his earlier health scare, the Daily Mail reported that people close to Richie were concerned about his determination to keep performing despite his health issues. The publication quoted an insider as saying that Richie’s family, friends and bandmates were concerned about his wellbeing but knew how important performing was to him.The report described Richie as someone who has remained constantly active throughout his career, with his attention often focused on his next performance.

Music remains central to Richie’s life

The Daily Mail report also described music as an important part of Richie’s identity, with the singer reportedly reluctant to slow down despite concerns from those around him.According to the report, people close to Richie believed that retirement was not something he had seriously considered unless his health ultimately forced him to do so.The report further claimed that Richie had been more upset about disappointing fans when his St Paul concert was cut short than about his own health. His strong work ethic has long been a defining feature of Richie’s career, which has spanned more than five decades.

    Upcoming concerts remain uncertain

Richie’s latest hospitalization raises questions about his upcoming tour dates.People reported that his next scheduled concert is September 26 in San Francisco. The singer is also scheduled to reunite with Earth, Wind & Fire for performances later this year, including shows in Chicago and Columbus. However, there has been no official announcement confirming whether Richie’s latest health issue will result in changes to his schedule. For now, the singer remains under medical observation in St Louis, with further information about his condition expected as doctors complete their tests.
