Your Child Turned 18? The therapist says parents must let go of these 5 habits to build trust, confidence, and independence

Every parent wants what’s best for their child, and that instinct doesn’t just disappear once the child grows up. Many parents continue offering advice, stepping in to protect, and trying to guide every decision, even long after their child has technically become an adult. But according to family therapist and counsellor Archana Singhal, founder of Mindwell Counsel, this is exactly where many parents unintentionally go wrong. Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Singhal explained that once a child turns eighteen, the relationship between parent and child needs to evolve too. What worked during childhood, constant supervision, decision-making, and correction, doesn’t necessarily work anymore once that child becomes an adult and starts craving independence.

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

Singhal points out that turning eighteen isn’t just a legal milestone; it marks a genuine psychological shift from childhood into adulthood. If parents continue to control every part of their adult child’s life the way they did when the child was young, it can seriously affect that child’s self-esteem, sense of independence, and overall mental well-being. She explains that when parents have always made every decision on their child’s behalf, the child can grow up feeling anxious, resentful, indecisive, or constantly afraid of making the “wrong” choice. According to her, good parenting at this stage isn’t about control anymore; it’s about shifting into the role of a guide or mentor. Continuous parental involvement in every decision, she says, doesn’t help children grow; it actually holds them back from learning to trust their own judgment. With that in mind, here are five things Singhal believes parents should gradually stop doing once their children step into adulthood.

    1. Stop making all their decisions for them

Stop making all their decisions for them
It’s natural for parents to want to weigh in on big life choices like education, career, marriage, or friendships. But Singhal advises that parents should offer guidance and advice, not make the final call themselves. Letting adult children take charge of their own choices, even if they aren’t the choices a parent would have made, helps build independence and a genuine sense of responsibility.

    2. Don’t turn every mistake into a failure

Adult children are allowed to make mistakes, and mistakes are often how people learn the most. Instead of rushing in to fix things the moment something goes wrong, Singhal suggests parents ask a simple question instead: “What do you think you could have done differently?” This approach avoids blaming or belittling the child and instead gives them the space to reflect on their own actions and understand the consequences themselves.

    3. Stop snooping on their lives

Constantly checking an adult child’s whereabouts, finances, phone messages, or social media activity might come from a place of concern, but it often ends up signalling something else entirely: a lack of trust. Singhal emphasises that adult children deserve personal boundaries, just like anyone else. Parents can absolutely stay involved and keep communication open, but that involvement shouldn’t come at the cost of the child’s privacy.

    4. Stop playing the comparison game

Comparing an adult child to their siblings, cousins, or even family friends might seem harmless, but it can chip away at their self-esteem over time. Singhal points out that these comparisons often leave adult children feeling inadequate or like they’re constantly falling short, even when that isn’t the intention behind the comparison. Instead, she recommends focusing on the individual child’s own journey and how far they’ve personally come, rather than measuring them against someone else’s path.

    5. Stop using guilt to influence their choices

Perhaps one of the more subtle habits parents fall into is guilt-tripping their adult child into decisions they aren’t comfortable with. Statements like “You’ll disappoint us if you take that job” may seem like gentle nudges, but they can leave adult children feeling guilty simply for choosing what feels right for them. Singhal notes that this kind of pressure often does more harm than good, creating unnecessary tension within the family rather than bringing everyone closer.

    The bigger picture

    The bigger picture
None of this means parents should stop caring or step back completely once their child turns eighteen. What Singhal is really describing is a shift in how that care is expressed, moving from control to trust, and from correction to guidance. Letting go of constant oversight isn’t about loving a child any less; it’s about respecting their growth into adulthood and giving them the room to build confidence in their own decisions. In the long run, that shift may be exactly what strengthens the relationship, rather than weakening it.
