This 200-year-old temple in Salem, Tamil Nadu is believed to fulfil wishes in 40 days; know the story and how to reach
    Salem, Tamil Nadu (Instagram)

Tamil Nadu is a beautiful South Indian state famous for its old and powerful temples. But in Salem, there is a temple where devotees do more than simply offering prayers. A unique local ritual associated with Lord Muniyappa (also known as king of Salem) is believed by devotees to help their wishes come true within 40 days of visit. The temple is known as the Arulmigu Vennankodi Muniyappa Swamy Temple in Jagir Ammapalayam, Salem. One of the most unusual things about the temple is that it is never closed and devotees can visit here at any time of the day. As per local belief, the temple is over 200 years old. Muniyappa is worshipped here as a village and guardian deity.Let’s find out more about this templeWho is Muniyappa?Muniyappa is among the guardian deities deeply associated with Tamil Nadu’s local traditions. Unlike the grand temple complexes, shrines dedicated to guardian gods often have a more local character. The rituals are closely connected to the local beliefs (community base). The deity is depicted with a sickle in hand, a thick moustache and big eyes. He is considered to be a powerful deity and hence the people believe that it is customary to offer sacrifices to the God as part of the worship. Another unique part about the temple is that devotees offer alcohol or todi to the deity. The unusual setting of the temple

At Vennankodi Muniyappa Temple, the deity is said to sit beneath a creeper known as Vennankodi. This unusual setting is also part of the temple’s identity. The official temple history describes Muniyappa as a protector. The lord is associated with prayers for protection and the removal of what devotees consider negative influences.Sundays, Wednesdays, Fridays and new-moon days are said to attract larger numbers of devotees. The 40-day “wish come true” beliefThe temple has attracted attention because of a distinctive ritual through which devotees express a wish before Muniyappa. According to the popular belief, devotees expect their prayer to be answered within 40 days.It is important to describe this as a devotional belief rather than a guaranteed result. There is no scientific evidence of it. Such claims belong to the realm of faith, tradition and individual experience. What’s in for travellersInterestingly, Muniyappa here is not only regarded as a village protector. The official temple history says devotees undertaking long-distance journeys traditionally seek the lord’s blessings before travelling. The temple also conducts vehicle-related worship and it is not unusual to see many truck drivers stopping here and praying to the lord before going on their journey.Temple timings and pujaOne of the unusual practical features of the temple is its reported opening hours. The HR&CE Department lists the shrine as being open 24 hours, although specific pujas take place at designated times. The listed services include the morning Kalasanthi puja from 6 am to 6:30 AM and an evening puja from 6 pm to 6:30 PM.How to reach Muniyappa TempleBy road: The temple can be reached easily by taxi, auto-rickshaw or local transport from Salem city. The temple is on the Bengaluru National Highway.By train: Salem is an important railway junction and is well connected with major cities in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India. From outside the railway station, bus, taxis are available for Jagir Ammapalayam.By air: Salem has an airport, while Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli are larger nearby air gateways.Places to visit in and around SalemA visit to the temple can be combined with other attractions in and around Salem. Some of the prime attractions include Kottai Mariamman Temple, Sri Suguvaneshwara Temple, Kumaragiri Murugan Temple, the 1008 Lingam Temple and Mettur Dam.For travellers, therefore, Vennankodi Muniyappa Temple is not simply a stop for a wish. It is also an opportunity to experience a less conventional side of Tamil Nadu’s temple culture, where guardian-deity traditions, local customs and centuries-old faith continue to shape the character of a place.
