A fight over chutney sounds like the sort of argument that should end with a few angry words and, at most, someone walking away. But in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, a disagreement over what chutney was served with pakoras reportedly turned into a full-blown street fight.The incident took place at a pakora shop in Dehra village in Hapur district. A video of the clash has now gone viral on social media, showing two groups fighting in the middle of a busy marketplace.And things got messy very quickly. Punches and kicks were thrown, stones and belts were used, and at one point, a large metal strainer was reportedly turned into a weapon.
What started the Hapur pakora shop fight ?
According to an NDTV report, the trouble began when a group of customers was allegedly served sweet tamarind chutney instead of green chutney with their pakoras.What might normally have been a simple complaint reportedly took a much more serious turn. The group confronted the shopkeeper and allegedly attacked him. Other people then gathered to defend the shopkeeper, and within moments, the argument had turned into a fight involving several people.The video shows the two groups going at each other in the middle of the marketplace. People are seen throwing punches and kicks, while stones and belts also appear to be used during the clash.Then comes perhaps the strangest moment in the footage. One person picks up a large metal strainer and appears to hit another man with it.In the confusion, one man’s shirt is pulled off. Another person appears to be hit with a rock. People standing around the shop can be seen watching the chaos, with some looking visibly shocked or frightened.A woman also tries to step in and stop the fight, but her attempt doesn’t appear to make much difference.Four people were reportedly injured in the brawl.
Police begin investigation
As the video started making the rounds online, police from Dhaulana Police Station began looking into the incident.Circle Officer Munish Chandra told NDTV that police had received information about a clash between two groups in Dehra and that a video of the incident had also surfaced.Medical examinations of those injured were being carried out, while police were working to identify the people involved using the viral footage.According to the officer, necessary legal action will be taken against those found responsible.The bizarre street fight has also brought back memories of another viral Uttar Pradesh food-shop clash. In 2021, two chat sellers in Baghpat were involved in a fight over attracting customers. The incident became widely known online as the ‘Battle of Baghpat’.The Hapur clash has now drawn similar attention online, although the reported trigger this time was far more unexpected.A dispute over green versus tamarind chutney somehow ended with an entire marketplace witnessing punches, stones, belts and a metal strainer being used in a brawl.
