Long before he set foot on a college campus, McMillion was showing signs of unusual ability. According to Calhoun Community College, his mother, Emma-Sara McMillion, noticed his exceptional ability to learn around the age of two, when he began identifying letters and sounding out words. By the time most children were learning their alphabet, he was reading street signs aloud, watching science documentaries and asking questions well beyond his years. After years of individualised homeschooling focused on mastery rather than memorisation, he took a standardised college admissions test as a benchmark, and his high scores confirmed he was ready for a more structured and challenging setting.
Enrolling at Calhoun Community College and admissions conversations
The next step followed a series of thorough conversations between McMillion’s family and Calhoun’s admissions team and faculty. Those discussions considered not only academic readiness but also his emotional maturity, learning style and long-term aspirations. In the fall of 2025, he began working toward an Associate of Science in General Education with a focus on chemistry, taking a mix of in-person and online courses including American National Government, English Composition I, Freshman Seminar, Intermediate College Algebra, Precalculus Algebra and Music Appreciation. Doctor Jimmy Hodges, the college’s president, said McMillion is a shining example of what happens when curiosity, hard work and community come together.

A steep learning curve: McMillion’s first year of college
McMillion’s first year was not without its challenges. He told WAFF 48 that navigating college coursework came with a steep learning curve that required strict time management. “Some days were stressful,” and he learned that procrastination “is not at all an option.” His discipline paid off: he completed his historic freshman year with a 3.5 grade point average, earning a spot on the college’s Dean’s List. Now beginning his sophomore year at fourteen, McMillion expects to be done with his degree around this time next year, adding that he can barely believe it.
Career goals; what McMillion says comes next for him
Those who know McMillion best say his character leaves the greatest impression. His mother told Calhoun Community College that he is grounded and kind, never acts like he is better than anyone else, and simply wants to learn and make a difference rather than be the youngest. Wes Rakestraw, the college’s Vice President of Academics, said that although McMillion is young in age, he brings a level of discipline and drive that inspires everyone. McMillion hopes to explore innovative ways to solve real-world problems, start impactful businesses and study systems deeply in order to improve them. He says working hard gives him a “huge head start,” and that “your age, it’s just a number.”
