Roberto Carlos made a fortune during a 24-year career spent winning almost everything there was to win, but the former Brazil and Real Madrid star says almost all of it is now gone. The 53-year-old has revealed that he lost 99% of what he earned from football, while giving only a limited explanation of how his finances unravelled and pointing instead to serious family problems, agents and people he trusted.

Carlos says people he trusted emptied his bank account

Speaking at the Portugal Football Summit in Lisbon, Carlos opened up about his finances while discussing the importance of planning for life after football and protecting a player’s image beyond the pitch.“I had problems with people who emptied my bank account. I lost 99% of everything I earned from football,” Carlos said.He did not provide a full breakdown of what happened to his money, but said agents and family issues were central to the financial problems he experienced.“Because of agents and family issues, I lost 99% of everything I had earned in football,” he added.Carlos also described the moment he realised the scale of what had happened, saying that it came with almost no warning.“I had a very serious family problem. One Thursday, I went to bed at midnight and the next day, I received a pile of documents I knew nothing about. That’s when I realised I had lost my entire history.”Carlos did not identify the family members involved or explain precisely what the documents contained, so his comments do not establish that his children, wives or other relatives were personally responsible for the losses. His personal life has been unusually large by any measure, with Carlos having 11 children, relationships with seven women and two marriages, but he has not publicly attributed the financial problems to any particular member of his family.Reports from Globo have also pointed to problems involving agents and advisers, although Carlos himself has remained relatively vague about the precise circumstances. The numbers involved make the admission particularly striking. Estimates put Carlos’ career football earnings at around $180 million, meaning that losing 99% would amount to more than $178 million and leave roughly $1.8 million from that original sum.Celebrity Net Worth, meanwhile, currently estimates his net worth at $5 million, although that figure is separate from Carlos’ own account of losing 99% of his football earnings.

His playing career generated enormous wealth

Carlos had the kind of career that made significant wealth possible, particularly during the peak years of European football’s spending boom.He spent 11 seasons with Real Madrid, making 527 appearances and winning four La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies. He played alongside Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldo and David Beckham during the club’s famous Galácticos era and became one of the defining left-backs of his generation. When Carlos renewed his Real Madrid contract in 2000, he reportedly received an $8.5 million signing bonus alongside a $5.1 million annual salary, with the club also covering his home rent and six trips to São Paulo each season. After leaving Madrid in 2007, he joined Fenerbahçe, where he earned €4.2 million net per season.Even later in his career, the money remained substantial. In 2011, at the age of 37, Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala offered him a contract worth €6 million per year, then approximately $9 million.Carlos eventually continued playing into his 40s, making his final appearances as a player-manager in India in 2015.Across those years, his football career is estimated to have generated around $180 million, a figure that reflects both his club contracts and the extraordinary commercial value attached to one of the sport’s most recognisable defenders.

The career behind the fortune was extraordinary

Carlos’ financial story is difficult to separate from just how successful he was as a footballer. For Brazil, he played at three World Cups and helped the country win the 2002 tournament after reaching the final four years earlier. He made more than 120 appearances for the national team and spent much of his peak being regarded as not only the world’s leading left-back but one of the best players in football. He came close to major individual honours as well. Carlos finished second to Ronaldo in the 1997 FIFA World Player of the Year voting and again finished second to his Brazilian teammate for the 2002 Ballon d’Or after winning the World Cup.His most famous moment may have come in 1997, when his free-kick against France appeared to be travelling several yards wide before swerving dramatically back towards the goal. The strike became one of football’s most famous goals and was subsequently studied by physicists because of the unusual trajectory.Away from the pitch, Carlos says he had always understood that his playing career would eventually end and that he needed something to fall back on.“I made mistakes, and therefore, I ask younger players not to do the same. I always thought about future plans after my playing career,” he said.Carlos said he had already obtained his sporting director’s licence by the time he decided to leave football and was working with several brands, allowing him to build a second career around his name and reputation.“It’s about building a history as a player and leveraging your image,” he said. “When I decided to leave football, I already had my sporting director’s licence and was working with many brands.”

Carlos now works in football and continues to operate as a brand ambassador, including in his role with Real Madrid as an ambassador for Asia and Oceania and director of institutional relations. His warning to younger players is consequently less about the size of a footballer’s salary than what happens around it. Carlos earned millions at some of the biggest clubs in the world, built a career that produced World Cup and Champions League titles, and became one of the most recognisable players of his era.Yet he says that people he trusted, agents and serious family problems ultimately left him with only a fraction of what that career had generated.Carlos has not provided all the details behind the losses, but his message at the Portugal Football Summit was clear enough: earning a fortune during a football career is one thing, protecting it when other people have access to your finances is another.
