Auqib Nabi endures nightmare India debut; concedes most runs, records worst economy

Auqib Nabi made his much-anticipated India debut on Wednesday in the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati, but things did not go according to plan as the right-arm pacer from Jammu & Kashmir was taken apart by the Caribbean batters.Nabi conceded 84 runs in 8.5 overs and was hit for nine fours and one six. His 84 runs are the most conceded by an Indian bowler on ODI debut, surpassing Karsan Ghavri’s 83 runs in 11 overs against England at Lord’s in 1975.Nabi’s economy rate of 9.51 is also the worst by an Indian bowler on ODI debut, among those who have bowled at least 30 balls, Cricbuzz reported. However, Nabi was not the only Indian bowler under pressure as the West Indies batters took complete control. Centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo helped the West Indies post their first 400-plus total in ODI cricket, as they finished on 405/7 in the second ODI.Highest ODI totals for West Indies

After being sent in to bat, Campbell set the tone with a 65-ball century as the West Indies exposed India’s inexperienced pace attack. The opener eventually scored 101 off 68 balls, with nine fours and five sixes.A self-confessed admirer of Chris Gayle, Campbell brought the same attacking approach to his innings as he took on the Indian bowlers from the start.Hope and Jangoo then kept the West Indies in control through the middle and later stages of the innings, maintaining a scoring rate of around eight runs an over.Hope played the role of both anchor and aggressor. He built his innings carefully before increasing the pace after getting a reprieve on 27, when Virat Kohli dropped him at short midwicket and the ball went through his hands. The West Indies captain went on to score 104 off 94 balls, hitting eight fours and three sixes, and kept the scoring rate high to prevent India from making a comeback.Jangoo complemented Hope with a mix of controlled strokeplay and attacking shots. He reached his second ODI century in just 69 balls and finished with 114 off 83 balls, including 13 fours and three sixes. The three centuries made it the first time the West Indies had scored three hundreds in an ODI. Their total of 405/7 also surpassed their previous best of 389 against England in 2019.In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who is on Asian Games duty, and Mohammed Siraj, who continues to sit out, India are giving opportunities to younger bowlers as they look for options ahead of the 2027 World Cup in South Africa. However, the pace attack raised more questions than it answered.Nabi, who became the third cricketer from the Valley to represent India, endured a difficult outing, conceding 84 runs in his 8.5 overs. Operating at military-medium pace, he struggled to contain the West Indies on a flat surface.Gurnoor Brar, who was used as the second-change bowler, was the best of the three returning pacers with figures of 2/96, while Prasidh Krishna took 1/45 in five overs.India also suffered another setback when batting all-rounder Naman Dhir, who bowls off-spin, twisted his ankle and left the field in the 36th over after bowling 6.1 overs. The two spinners were the only bright spots for India. Kuldeep Yadav took 2/65 and entered the 200-wicket club in ODIs, while Ravindra Jadeja finished with 2/75.
