‘One of the best decisions I’ve made’: Chennai founder shares how moving to Bengaluru changed his business and life

For many startup founders, choosing a city is almost as important as choosing the right business idea. Where a company is based can affect everything from finding customers and hiring employees to meeting investors and controlling expenses. For Harish Varadharajan, shifting his agritech business from Chennai to Bengaluru has proved to be a decision that changed both his professional and personal experience. A year after making the move, Varadharajan reflected on what the city had offered him and his company. In a LinkedIn post, he described the relocation in clear terms. “One year since we made the move from Chennai to Bengaluru. Hands down, one of the best decisions I’ve made personally and professionally,” he wrote. Rather than focusing only on the city’s reputation as India’s startup capital, Varadharajan highlighted several practical reasons why the move worked for him.

From Chennai to Bengaluru, a year of unexpected changes

Varadharajan said Bengaluru turned out to be better than he had anticipated. Having lived in five cities around the world over the past decade, he had experienced different environments before settling in the city. One of the things he particularly appreciated was Bengaluru’s weather. The city’s traffic, despite being a frequent source of frustration for residents, also did not become a major problem in his experience. For his agritech venture, however, the more significant changes were connected to business. Varadharajan said Bengaluru offered a suitable market for premium fruits. He also believed the city’s weather helped lower some of the costs involved in running the business. But the biggest shift may have been the access to the startup ecosystem. Bengaluru has a dense network of entrepreneurs, venture capital firms, angel investors and technology professionals. For a founder trying to grow a company, being in the middle of that ecosystem can make it easier to meet people who could eventually become customers, partners or investors. That access was one of the benefits Varadharajan noticed after relocating.

    Why the startup ecosystem mattered

For Varadharajan, Bengaluru was not simply another place to operate the company. The city brought his business closer to an ecosystem where conversations around fundraising and entrepreneurship happen regularly. He said access to investors became easier and that the city’s startup community created more opportunities for networking. That experience led him to make a strong recommendation to other entrepreneurs. “If you’re starting a company in India or moving back to India to build one, Bengaluru is the obvious answer,” he wrote. His comments, however, are based on his own experience and do not necessarily mean Bengaluru would be the ideal location for every startup. For an agritech company, location can involve several additional considerations. Access to farms, agricultural markets, suppliers, logistics and food-processing networks can be just as important as access to venture capital. That is where the discussion around Bengaluru becomes more complicated.

Another founder points to Nashik as an alternative

Varadharajan’s post prompted other founders to share their experiences, including one entrepreneur whose company had moved from Mumbai to Bengaluru. The founder said the relocation had helped with hiring, infrastructure, customer access and connections with investors. “Wondering why we didn’t do it sooner,” the entrepreneur wrote, describing easier access to “talent, infra, customers, and of course investors.” The founder also said Bengaluru’s pleasant weather was an unexpected advantage. But another entrepreneur offered a different view, especially for businesses operating in agriculture and food. They suggested Nashik could be a better fit for some agribusinesses because of its strong agricultural ecosystem, suitable climate and proximity to important produce markets. This difference in opinion highlights why choosing a startup base is rarely a one-size-fits-all decision. Bengaluru may have a clear advantage when it comes to investors, technology talent and startup networks. Cities such as Nashik, meanwhile, can offer closer access to agricultural production and established food supply chains. For Varadharajan, the decision to leave Chennai and move to Bengaluru has nevertheless delivered the results he hoped for. After one year, he believes the relocation has helped him not only build his company but also improve his experience as a founder. His story ultimately shows that for entrepreneurs, sometimes the right business move is not about changing the idea or the strategy. It can simply be about finding the city where the business has the right ecosystem to grow.
