A Michigan collector paid $30 for a seashell painting at an estate sale; identified as a 1951 Gertrude Abercrombie work, it has now sold at Freeman's in New York for a record $1,352,600

A painting bought for just $30 at a Michigan estate sale has sold for $1,352,600 at auction in New York, after experts identified it as a long-lost 1951 work by Chicago Surrealist Gertrude Abercrombie. The painting, Alderman Merriam’s Shells, had been missing from public view for about 75 years before it resurfaced this summer. It ultimately set a new world auction record for Abercrombie at Freeman’s Post-War & Contemporary Art sale on October 1.The result was dramatically higher than the painting’s presale estimate of $150,000 to $250,000. It opened at $80,000, with five telephone bidders and several online bidders competing for the work. Freeman’s said the final $1,352,600 figure includes the buyer’s premium; the hammer price was $1.06 million. The result made it the first Abercrombie work to cross the $1 million mark at auction.

Collector spotted signature at Michigan estate sale

The discovery began at a Michigan estate sale in July, when a longtime collector of records and mid-century furniture was looking around after much of the merchandise had already been picked over. In a dark corner of a hallway leading toward the garage, the collector noticed a small painting measuring about 8 by 11 inches. The work showed a group of seashells against a subdued background. What caught his attention was the signature: “Abercrombie,” along with the year 1951.The collector paid $30 for the painting, apparently recognising that the name could be significant. He later investigated further and came across Abercrombie’s retrospective, The Whole World Is a Mystery, which was touring the Midwest. The exhibition was presented at the Milwaukee Art Museum from March 27 to July 19, 2026 and brought together nearly 80 paintings from museums and private collections. The collector’s research produced a remarkable match. The exhibition catalogue reproduced a 1952 Chicago Tribune photograph showing Alderman Merriam’s Shells in its original frame, alongside the actual shells depicted in the painting. That archival evidence helped establish that the seemingly ordinary estate-sale painting was the same work that had disappeared from public view decades earlier. Dr Susan Weininger, an expert on Abercrombie and professor emerita of art history at Roosevelt University, subsequently authenticated it.

Nine shells and one unusual detail

Painted in 1951, Alderman Merriam’s Shells depicts nine seashells arranged across a slate-grey surface. A conical shell appears suspended by a thread against a dark wall, giving the small composition an uncanny, almost floating quality. The shells were connected to Robert Merriam, a Chicago alderman who lived in Hyde Park, the neighbourhood where Abercrombie lived and worked. The work is particularly significant because it appears to show Abercrombie painting directly from physical objects rather than simply inventing them from memory. According to Freeman’s, the painting provides evidence that the shells seen in some of her later solitary shell compositions were rooted in observation. The painting was exhibited in six solo shows during 1952 and 1953. Abercrombie later gave it to Dr John Reynolds of Kalamazoo, Michigan, in exchange for medical services. It remained with Reynolds’ family for decades before eventually turning up at the estate sale.

    Who was Gertrude Abercrombie?

Abercrombie, who lived from 1909 to 1977, was a distinctive figure in Chicago’s mid-20th-century art scene. Her paintings frequently featured spare landscapes and recurring symbols such as moons, owls, cats, doors and solitary figures. The Milwaukee Art Museum describes her as a leading figure in Chicago’s Hyde Park arts community and notes her close connections with the city’s bohemian and jazz circles. Musicians including Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker were among those associated with the gatherings at her home.Although Abercrombie developed a strong following among Chicago artists and collectors during her lifetime, she remained comparatively under-recognised nationally for decades. That has changed significantly in recent years, with museums and collectors paying increasing attention to her work. The 2026 Milwaukee exhibition was described by the museum as the most comprehensive presentation of Abercrombie’s work ever organised. It was co-organised by Carnegie Museum of Art and Colby College Museum of Art and explored the artist’s distinctive combination of dreamlike imagery, personal symbolism and Midwestern settings. The rediscovery also comes amid a broader reassessment of Abercrombie’s market. The painting’s final price at Freeman’s was more than five times its high estimate and surpassed the previous auction record for the artist. Freeman’s said the October 1 sale achieved $3,449,560 overall, with an 88% sell-through rate by lot and participation from buyers in 12 countries. The auction house also reported that 23% of its buyers in the sale were new to the firm.
