How to keep stinkbugs out of your house this fall: Simple tips to prevent them from getting inside

There’s a particular kind of dread that comes with spotting a stink bug clinging to your curtain or crawling along a windowsill, mostly because everyone knows exactly what happens if you make the mistake of squashing it. As temperatures start dropping through fall, these mottled brown pests go into full house-hunting mode, searching for somewhere warm to ride out the winter, and your home looks exactly like what they’re after. The good news is keeping them out doesn’t require anything drastic, just a bit of sealing, some strategic scents, and a few small habits around the house. Here’s how to stop them before they ever get inside.

Understand why they’re suddenly showing up

This isn’t random timing. As the weather cools, stink bugs actively seek out warm, sheltered spots to spend the winter, and they’re not fussy about how they get in. They’re genuinely opportunistic, slipping through whatever gap happens to be available rather than targeting your home specifically. Homes that catch a lot of direct sunlight tend to see more activity too, since the warmth draws them in even before the weather turns properly cold.

Seal every gap you can find

This is, by a wide margin, the most important step, and the one every expert keeps coming back to. Walk around your windows and doors checking for small cracks, torn or loose screens, and gaps where pipes, wires, or gas lines pass through an exterior wall. Seal what you find with a good quality silicone or silicone-latex caulk, and check that door sweeps and weather stripping are sitting flush and intact, not worn down or gapping at the corners. Even tiny, barely visible openings are enough for a stink bug to squeeze through.

Try natural scents they genuinely dislike

Certain herbal oils seem to work as a real deterrent, mint and clove in particular. Dilute either oil in water and spray it directly around windowsills, door frames, and screens, areas stink bugs are most likely to come into contact with on their way in. It’s a simple, low-effort step worth combining with your sealing work rather than relying on alone.

Keep outdoor lighting and vegetation in check

Bright exterior lights are a genuine draw for stink bugs, so switching to yellow, bug-resistant bulbs near entryways, or simply dimming lights you don’t need on, can meaningfully cut down on how many end up near your doors in the first place. It helps to tidy up outside too, keep the lawn mowed, clear away fallen leaves and fruit, and move plants with a lot of sap or nectar further from the house, since all of these quietly work as stink bug magnets.

Set a simple trap for any stragglers

Even with careful sealing, a few will likely still find their way in. A basic homemade trap works surprisingly well here, a desk lamp positioned over a shallow pan of soapy water draws them toward the light, and they fall in and can’t escape once they land. Keep the lamp and cord well clear of the water itself, and position the whole setup somewhere out of reach of children and pets.

Whatever you do, don’t crush them

If you do spot one indoors, resist the obvious instinct. Stink bugs release a genuinely unpleasant odour when crushed, which is exactly how they get their name. Vacuum them up instead, or gently guide them into a cup and release them outside. It’s a small habit, but it’s the difference between a quick, odourless cleanup and a smell that lingers in the room for hours.None of this guarantees a completely stink-bug-free home through autumn, but between sealing entry points, cutting back what attracts them, and knowing how to handle the odd one that gets in anyway, you’ll see a genuine difference by the time the weather properly turns cold.
