‘I’m no Nostradamus’: Chennai investment adviser urges families to build a three-year emergency fund amid economic uncertainty

‘I’m no Nostradamus’: Chennai investment adviser urges families to build a three-year emergency fund amid economic uncertainty

Chennai-based investment adviser Muthukrishnan Dhandapani has sparked an online discussion after sharing his concerns about the possibility of difficult economic conditions in the future. In a post on X on September 29, Dhandapani clarified that he was not claiming to predict an upcoming crisis. Instead, he said he had been highlighting possible risks for the past two years and urged families to prepare financially rather than panic. His advice centred on one key idea: households should strengthen their financial safety net before they actually need it.

‘Create a safe reserve’ for difficult times

Dhandapani began his message by distancing himself from the idea that he could predict exactly what would happen next. “I’m no Nostradamus,” he wrote. “I’ve been cautioning for the last two years about some of the possibilities I saw coming.” He then repeated what he described as his long-standing advice to families: build a substantial emergency corpus. “Try your level best to create a safe reserve or emergency corpus that can cover three years of your family’s complete expenses,” he wrote. A three-year emergency fund is considerably larger than the emergency savings commonly recommended for many households, so his suggestion should be understood as his personal view rather than a universal financial rule. The basic principle behind emergency savings, however, is widely used in personal financial planning. Having accessible savings can help households manage unexpected job losses, medical expenses or other disruptions without immediately depending on high-cost borrowing or selling investments at an unfavourable time. Dhandapani also advised people to avoid increasing their debt burden. “Don’t borrow. No fresh loans,” he wrote.

Adviser cautions against major long-term commitments

Another part of his message focused on large financial commitments. “Don’t take on long-term commitments like real estate or a house purchase,” Dhandapani advised. Buying property is a highly individual decision, and whether someone should purchase a home depends on factors such as income stability, existing debt, location, affordability and long-term plans. His broader argument appeared to be that households should be cautious about taking on significant fixed financial obligations when economic conditions are uncertain. He also suggested that people should remain flexible about their careers. “Don’t be too specific about jobs and roles. Now is the time to focus on ensuring income,” he wrote. The advice comes at a time when employment conditions can vary significantly across industries. For workers facing uncertainty, maintaining employability, developing transferable skills and having sufficient savings can provide some financial flexibility. However, Dhandapani did not suggest that people should panic about an imminent collapse. “It’s not that the sky is going to fall,” he wrote. “The world has faced such crises in the past. It will see them in the future too.”

His message is about preparation, not a confirmed prediction

The distinction is important. Dhandapani’s post represents his personal assessment and financial opinion. It does not establish that an economic crisis is about to occur, nor does it provide evidence of a specific upcoming event. His central message was instead about preparing for uncertainty. “Doing these things would help you manage tough times financially and emotionally,” he wrote. For households, that could mean reviewing monthly expenses, understanding existing debt, building accessible savings and avoiding financial decisions that could become difficult to manage if income suddenly falls. At the same time, a three-year emergency fund may not be realistic or necessary for every family. Financial needs differ depending on employment, dependants, insurance coverage, existing savings and other circumstances. People considering major financial changes may therefore need advice based on their individual situation rather than following a blanket recommendation. Dhandapani ended his post on a more reassuring note, arguing that difficult periods do not last forever. “And good times will definitely be back in the future,” he wrote. “Such is the nature of cycles.” His post has since prompted discussion online, with the broader takeaway being less about predicting the next crisis and more about whether households are financially prepared if one arrives.
