Think parks are clean? These are the germiest things you touch without realising

A park can look perfectly clean and still have plenty of places where germs quietly collect. You might be thinking about muddy shoes, dusty benches or the occasional stray dog, but some of the most frequently touched surfaces are probably not the ones you would notice first. From playground equipment to water taps, certain spots are touched by dozens of people every day, often without anyone thinking twice about what was left behind. Here are some of the germiest things you may come across during an ordinary visit to the park.

    1. Playground swings and slides

Children rarely use playground equipment with clean hands. They touch the ground, climb ladders, grab railings and then hold the same swing chains or slide surfaces.Swings, especially their chains and plastic seats, can be touched repeatedly throughout the day. Slides can also collect dirt and microbes from hands, clothes and shoes.

    2. Park benches

That bench may look harmless, but think about how many people sit there throughout the day.People touch the backrest, armrests and edges while sitting down or getting up. Some may have just come from exercising, eating, playing with pets or handling their phones.Wooden benches can also develop tiny cracks and rough surfaces where dirt can settle.

    3. Exercise equipment

Outdoor gyms are another easy one to overlook. The same handles, bars and grips can be used by several people within a short period.Someone may wipe their hands after exercising, but the equipment itself is not necessarily cleaned after every use. Handles are particularly worth remembering because they are touched directly and repeatedly.

    4. Water taps and drinking fountains

You may wash your hands or take a drink thinking you are doing the hygienic thing, but the tap itself can be one of the surfaces that gets touched the most.People turn taps on with dirty hands and then touch them again after washing. Public drinking fountains can have the same problem, especially around buttons, handles and the areas people lean towards.

    5. Park railings and gates

The entrance gate is one of the first things you touch and probably one of the last things you remember.Railings around walking paths, staircases and playgrounds can be handled constantly throughout the day. They are easy to ignore because they are part of the background, but frequent contact makes them worth noticing.

    6. Shared sports equipment

A football, basketball, cricket bat or other shared equipment can pass through many hands during a single game.Unlike your own belongings, you have no idea where someone else’s hands have been before they picked it up. Add sweat, outdoor dust and frequent handling, and shared equipment can become another surface worth cleaning after use.

    7. Dusty picnic tables

Picnic tables can collect more than crumbs. They are exposed to dust, pollen, bird activity and whatever people leave behind during meals.Children may also climb or play on them, while pets can come close to the surface. A quick wipe before eating can make sense, particularly if the table has been sitting outside for hours.Thumb image: Instagram
