Nana Patekar passes away at 75: Remembering his most iconic dialogues, from ‘Krantiveer’ to ‘Welcome’:‘Ek Machchhar Saala Aadmi Ko', ‘Aa Gaye Meri Maut Ka Tamaasha Dekhne?’

Nana Patekar, 75, passed away on Thursday morning after a heart attack. He had severe chest pain at his home in Goa, and a medical team was sent to his flat. Nana Patekar was great at making his dialogues stay in people’s minds. He played an angry revolutionary, a strict police officer, a gangster and a funny character. His voice, pauses and style made his lines memorable long after the film was over. Many of his dialogues are now linked to his roles. Some showed anger and spoke about society, some sounded scary, and in films like ‘Welcome’, he used the same energy to make people laugh. Here are some of Nana Patekar’s most memorable dialogues.

‘Ek Machchhar Saala Aadmi Ko Hijda Bana Deta Hai’ — ‘Yeshwant’ (1997)

Yeshwant offers one of Nana Patekar’s most powerful scenes, in which his character delivers a long, fiery monologue on how something tiny can shape a person’s entire life. “Ek machchhar, saala ek machchhar insaan ko aadmi se hijda bana deta hai. Ek khatmal puri raat ko apaahij kar deta hai. Subah ghar se niklo, bheed ka ek hissa bano. Shaam ko ghar jao, daru piyo aur bacchee paida karo, aur subah talak phir ek baar mar jao.” The writing is sharp, but Patekar’s delivery is what makes it stay with viewers. By moving smoothly between anger, frustration and exhaustion, he turned the scene into one of the performances he is remembered for.

‘Aa Gaye Meri Maut Ka Tamaasha Dekhne?’ — ‘Krantiveer’ (1994)

Few dialogues are as strongly linked to Nana Patekar’s ‘Krantiveer’ as “Aa gaye meri maut ka tamaasha dekhne?” It comes from one of the film’s most unforgettable scenes and shows the raw, confrontational side of his character. The performance is still one of the best examples of how Patekar’s voice and presence could turn a single line into a cinematic moment.

‘Pandrah Sau Ki Naukri Karne Waala…’ — ‘Tirangaa’ (1993)

Patekar’s role as a police officer in ‘Tirangaa’ gave him another memorable line, one that mixed a casual reference with a stark warning: “Pandrah sau ki naukri karne waala, ek din tujhe dedh sau ka kafan pehnayega.” The power of the line lies in its directness. The words themselves are simple, yet Patekar’s delivery makes them land, as a passing mention of a small salary becomes a chilling threat.

‘Yeh Musalman Ka Khoon, Yeh Hindu Ka Khoon’ — Krantiveer (1994)

‘Krantiveer’ also gave Patekar one of his strongest performances against communal divisions. In a memorable sequence, his character questions the idea of separating people by religion, pointing to the blood that runs in everyone’s veins. “Yeh Musalman ka khoon, yeh Hindu ka khoon… bata is mein Musalman ka kaunsa, Hindu ka kaunsa, bata” The scene gets its force from how direct the question is. Patekar doesn’t simply speak the lines; he confronts the people around him with them, which is why the dialogue remains one of the film’s most remembered moments.

‘Hum Sab System Ka Hissa Hain’ — ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’ (2004)

In ‘Ab Tak Chhappan’, Patekar showed a different kind of intensity as police officer Sadhu Agashe. His character worked within a system where key decisions were made above him, leaving little room for personal choice. “Ek police inspector joint commissioner ke saath kya argument karega? Unko bhi koi bada sahab bola hoga, hum sab system ka hissa hain. System decide karta hai, apun follow karta hai.” The shorter version most closely linked to the film is: “Hum sab system ka hissa hain, system decide karta hai, apun follow karta hai.” The line reflected the resignation and pragmatism of the character and became one of the film’s best-known dialogues.

‘Bhagwan Ka Diya Hua Sab Kuch Hai’ — ‘Welcome’ (2007)

Uday Shetty in ‘Welcome’ then revealed another side of Nana Patekar. The intensity was still there, but the anger and menace were turned into comic timing. “Bhagwan ka diya hua sab kuch hai. Daulat hai. Shohrat hai. Izzat hai. Bas ek nek aur shareef ladka chahiye tha.” His comic exchanges in the film gave rise to several memorable moments, such as: “Aalu le lo, kanda le lo… subah se na ek aalu bika hai, na bika hai aadha kanda” The performance showed how easily Patekar could move from hard-hitting drama to comedy while keeping the distinctive personality audiences associated with him.
