In February 2016, Serena Williams traded the tennis court for a construction site in Jamaica, joining charity partners, local workers and volunteers to help build the Salt Marsh Basic School in Trelawny. The project was created to give young children access to free early education in a community where such opportunities were limited. Williams contributed through the Serena Williams Fund, working with Helping Hands Jamaica and Food for the Poor on the initiative. According to Helping Hands Jamaica, the project also brought together musicians Shaggy and Sean Paul, sprinters Yohan Blake and Warren Weir, and other volunteers. Reports from Tennis News and the Jamaica Gleaner highlighted how the sports star used her global profile and personal time to support education beyond the world of tennis.

By 2016, Serena Williams was already one of the most recognisable athletes in the world. She had won major titles, attracted millions of fans and become a powerful figure in discussions about ambition, equality and women in sport. Yet her involvement in the Salt Marsh project was not limited to making a financial contribution or lending her name to a campaign.Williams travelled to Trelawny and took part in the physical work required to build the school. Her hands-on presence gave the effort an unusual sense of energy, while also drawing attention to the needs of children in the Jamaican community, as per reports. Helping Hands Jamaica described the Serena Williams Fund as one of its important partners. The organisation worked with Food for the Poor, an international charity involved in community development, to turn the project from a fundraising effort into a functioning school building.

Why the Salt Marsh school mattered

The Salt Marsh Basic School was designed to serve approximately 80 preschool children. For families in the area, the project represented more than a new building. It provided a safe and structured environment for children to start learning without having to pay tuition. Early childhood education can boost a child’s confidence, language development and readiness for primary school. A basic school can also give families a reliable place to take young children to learn and socialize while parents are working or doing household chores. In this respect, the Salt Marsh project addressed both education and the broader needs of the community. The school was built in the Salt Marsh area of Trelawny Parish, a region on Jamaica’s northern coast. By supporting a local facility rather than a short-term campaign, the charity partners aimed to create a lasting resource for children and families.

    A team effort

Williams was not alone at the construction site. Helping Hands Jamaica said the project involved a large group of celebrity and community volunteers. Among them were Jamaican musicians Shaggy and Sean Paul, both known for their international careers and strong connections to the island. Olympic sprinters Yohan Blake and Warren Weir also participated in the build. Their involvement added a sporting dimension to the project, but the effort was not designed as a celebrity event alone. The volunteers worked alongside charity representatives, construction teams and members of the wider community. The partnership reflected the way Helping Hands Jamaica approached its school-building projects. Instead of simply collecting donations and handing them to another organisation, the group encouraged supporters to travel to Jamaica and participate in the work. The model gave volunteers instant insight into the building process and a more personal connection to the communities they served.

    Education as a long-term investment

For Williams, the Jamaica project was part of a larger investment in access to education. Her charitable work has often focused on children and communities that lack resources, particularly in areas where schools, books and safe learning spaces are difficult to access. The Salt Marsh school also connected with Williams’ personal understanding of the importance of opportunity. Her success came through years of discipline, family support and access to training, coaching and education. By helping children receive a strong start, the project sought to give them the foundation to develop their own abilities.Tennis News reported on Williams’ participation in the initiative, while the Jamaica Gleaner’s social coverage drew attention to the group of public figures who joined the effort.Their reports helped show how the project brought together sport, music, charity and local community action.

    More than a celebrity appearance

Celebrity philanthropy can sometimes be criticised when it stops at publicity. The Salt Marsh project stood out because Williams was involved in the labour as well as the fundraising. Her participation did not replace the work of educators, builders or local organisations, but it helped bring attention and additional support to a practical community need. The school also demonstrated that meaningful change does not always begin with a large, highly visible institution. A building designed for 80 preschool children may appear modest compared with a major national education programme, but its impact can be direct and personal. For each child attending, it can mean access to teachers, classrooms, learning materials and a daily routine built around development.Helping Hands Jamaica described the project as a success and thanked Williams, her foundation and every volunteer who contributed time and energy. The message reflected the collaborative nature of the build. Williams might have been the most famous participant, but the school was the product of many people working together.A legacy away from the court The Salt Marsh Basic School is an example of Serena Williams using her influence during her playing career. Her success on the court made headlines, but projects like this were another side of her public life. She was willing to use her resources, platform and personal time to support children far from the major sporting venues where she usually competed. In Jamaica, the project gave a community a new educational space and offered preschool children a chance to begin their schooling in a more supportive setting. And it also highlighted the value of teamwork between charitable foundations, local groups and volunteers. For Williams, helping build Salt Marsh school was a reminder that a legacy isn’t just about trophies or records. Sometimes, it’s about a classroom where children get their first opportunity to learn, grow and dream bigger.
