Man out of work for 8 months says ‘sitting at home is more stressful’ than having a job, shares advice for those thinking of quitting

For many people, a stressful workday can make quitting a job feel like the easiest solution. Deadlines, targets, long hours and difficult managers can leave employees wondering whether life would be better without work altogether. But one man who has spent the past eight months away from his job says being without work has given him a very different perspective.Abhishek, who shares content on Instagram through the account @figuringlife.in, recently spoke about his experience after an accident left him on prolonged bed rest. Reflecting on the months he has spent at home, he said the experience made him realise that unemployment can bring its own kind of stress. “Look, if you have a job and you don’t feel like working, listen to me very carefully. I have been working for the past four years, and for the past eight months, I haven’t been working, meaning I haven’t been doing anything. I’m just sitting at home,” he said.According to Abhishek, the accident itself was minor, but his recovery took much longer than expected. “Why am I sitting at home? Because eight months ago, I had a minor accident. The accident was minor, but my bed rest dragged on for a very long time, which is why I’ve been at home for the past eight months,” he explained.

‘You will feel way more stress sitting at home’

Abhishek said his time away from work allowed him to compare two very different kinds of pressure. While a job can be demanding, he believes having no work can create uncertainty that is difficult to ignore. “And I’m telling you the truth, brother: however much stress you might feel while working, you will feel way more stress sitting at home,” he said. He added that this was not something he had learned from someone else. It was something he said he experienced personally during his eight months away from work. “I have felt this myself. I’ve experienced the stress of working, and over the past eight months, I’ve experienced the stress of sitting at home,” Abhishek said. For him, having a job provides more than just a source of income. Work can also bring structure to the day, regular interactions with colleagues and a sense of purpose. When that routine disappears, concerns about money, career growth and the future can become more prominent. He therefore advised people to think carefully before leaving a job simply because they are having a difficult phase. “And I’m telling you honestly, you can tolerate the stress of working, but you won’t be able to tolerate the stress of being at home. So whatever work you are doing, keep doing it. Don’t wish to just get rid of that job,” he said.

Quitting may not solve the problem

Abhishek’s message, however, was not that everyone should remain in an unhappy workplace. In the caption accompanying his video, he acknowledged that jobs can involve targets, deadlines, pressure and difficult managers. But he argued that leaving a job without considering what comes next can create a different set of challenges. He also made an important distinction for people dealing with unhealthy workplaces.“If your job is mentally draining you, make a change. But don’t assume that quitting your job automatically means your life will become peaceful,” he wrote. His suggestion was to think about what kind of work or career change could make life better rather than simply trying to escape the current situation. That distinction is particularly relevant because quitting and being unemployed are not the same experience. Someone may feel immediate relief after leaving a stressful workplace, but financial uncertainty, loss of routine and the pressure to find another job can create new difficulties.

Social media discusses the pressure of unemployment

Abhishek’s experience prompted several people to share their own views about work and unemployment. “Being unemployed brings a different kind of stress,” one person commented. Another wrote, “A job gives you more than just a salary.” A third called Abhishek’s message “a very practical perspective”, while another pointed out, “Quitting without a plan can make things harder.” Abhishek’s story is ultimately a personal account of how an extended break from work changed his understanding of workplace stress. His message is not necessarily that people should stay in every job, but that leaving one without a plan does not automatically remove stress from life. For someone struggling with work, the decision may therefore be less about simply asking, “Should I quit?” and more about asking, “What do I want to move towards next?”
