Denise Richards became a Hollywood face for shelter dogs, introducing rescued animals through Best Friends' adoption campaign

Actress Denise Richards used her Hollywood profile to promote shelter animal adoption through a monthly television segment launched in partnership with Best Friends Animal Society and Access Hollywood Live in February 2011. The initiative introduced viewers to rescued animals looking for permanent homes, beginning with Rascal, a tan Chihuahua rescued in the Los Angeles area. Richards, a longtime supporter and ambassador for Best Friends, helped bring attention to animals that needed adopters. Her involvement extended beyond television appearances: she also adopted a blind dog named Preston through the organisation. The effort combined celebrity visibility with a practical goal, encouraging viewers to consider adopting pets from shelters and rescue groups.

How Denise Richards helped promote shelter dog adoption

Best Friends Animal Society announced the television segment on February 24, 2011. The monthly feature on Access Hollywood Live was designed to introduce an adoptable animal to viewers and provide information for people interested in offering a pet a permanent home.Richards introduced the first featured dog, Rascal, a tan Chihuahua rescued in the Los Angeles area. At the time, the dog was available for adoption. Viewers interested in Rascal or other animals could contact Best Friends for information about adoption opportunities. The initiative gave shelter animals exposure beyond the people who visited adoption centres. By presenting individual pets on a television programme, the segment allowed viewers to learn about animals that might otherwise have received less public attention.

Why Best Friends Animal Society launched the segment

Best Friends Animal Society is a nonprofit organisation working with shelters, rescue groups and communities to find homes for homeless pets. Its programmes include animal care, adoption initiatives and partnerships intended to improve outcomes for dogs and cats in shelters. The television segment formed part of those broader efforts. Best Friends partnered with Access Hollywood Live to introduce adoptable animals to a wider audience and encourage people to consider bringing a shelter pet into their homes. The format focused on individual animals rather than adoption in the abstract. Viewers could see a particular dog, learn that it needed a home and find out how to enquire about adopting it. The organisation hoped that the additional exposure would help more animals find permanent homes.

Richards also adopted a blind dog named Preston

Richards’ involvement with animal welfare was not limited to promoting adoption on television. In May 2011, Fox News reported that she had adopted a blind dog named Preston through Best Friends Animal Society.Richards said she contacted the organisation after her mother’s dog, Sheena, died. She wanted to adopt an animal that might be harder to place, and eventually brought Preston home. Her decision offered a personal example of adopting an animal with additional needs. It also reflected the message behind her public involvement: pets that may require extra care can still become companions in suitable homes.Preston’s adoption was separate from the television segment featuring Rascal. The two stories nevertheless show different aspects of Richards’ work with Best Friends, from encouraging viewers to adopt shelter animals to adopting a dog herself.

Television exposure helped other shelter animals find homes

In a follow-up article published on February 15, 2012, Best Friends reported that dogs and cats from its Los Angeles programmes were regularly appearing on television, including on Access Hollywood and FOX’s Good Day LA. The organisation’s mobile adoption coordinator, Jf Pryor, said many animals found homes after appearing on television, with some adoption enquiries arriving as soon as the following day.The report described several successful adoptions. A German shepherd and Shiba Inu mix initially named Clarice was adopted and renamed Kazi. A six-year-old Yorkshire terrier mix called Lou Who, who had been found wandering alone, was adopted by viewers who saw her on television and renamed Lulu.Another dog, Ribbon, was featured on Good Day LA and reportedly had a suitable home lined up shortly afterwards. These cases demonstrate how television exposure can connect shelter animals with prospective adopters. The report did not establish that these particular adoptions resulted from Richards’ appearances specifically. The initiative was part of a wider effort involving animal welfare organisations, shelters, volunteers and prospective adopters. Although the available reports do not provide a total number of adoptions directly attributable to Richards’ segment, they document the programme’s purpose and describe how television appearances helped other shelter animals attract potential homes.
