‘Rs 50,000-60,000 monthly profit’: Man discovers how his cook’s son runs a smartphone screen protector business

A simple conversation about household expenses led to a surprising business discovery for a man named Pratham, who learnt that his household cook’s son was earning a living by supplying smartphone screen protectors to local mobile shops. What caught his attention was not just the reported monthly profit, but how a relatively small setup could serve a steady market. The story, shared by Pratham on X, began when he casually asked his cook how he managed his family’s finances. The cook explained that he earned money through his work and that his son also ran a tempered glass business. Pratham initially assumed the young man owned a small mobile repair shop. However, as he learnt more about the business, he discovered that the son operated a screen protector cutting setup and supplied products to nearby retailers. Curious to understand how the operation worked, Pratham asked his cook to bring his son over so he could learn about the business firsthand.

A Rs 70,000 machine and a straightforward process

According to Pratham’s post, the young entrepreneur had invested in a glass-cutting machine worth around Rs 70,000. The equipment allowed him to cut screen protectors according to the requirements of different smartphone models. Sharing what he learnt from the conversation, Pratham wrote, “The next day, his son told me about his setup: A Rs 70,000 glass-cutting machine and told a simple process to run.”The business model described in the post relies on producing screen protectors for specific phone models and supplying them to local mobile shops. Pratham claimed that the machine could cut a protector in around 30 seconds, making it possible to fulfil orders quickly. He also shared the reported cost and selling price. Each screen protector costs approximately Rs 8 to Rs 10 to produce and is sold to retailers for around Rs 25 to Rs 30.Based on these figures, the difference between the stated production cost and selling price is about Rs 15 to Rs 22 per piece, before accounting for other expenses. These could include electricity, packaging, transport, machine maintenance, wastage and other operating costs. Pratham said the business generates a monthly profit of around Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000. However, these figures come from his account on social media and have not been independently verified. The actual profit would depend on the number of units sold, operating costs and the consistency of demand.

How a small business can serve local mobile shops

Smartphone screen protectors are widely used to protect device displays from scratches and everyday wear. Since different phones have different screen dimensions and designs, retailers need protectors that fit specific models. A cutting machine can help businesses produce protectors according to digital templates rather than relying entirely on pre-cut inventory. This can be useful for shops serving customers who own less common or newer smartphone models. It is important, however, to distinguish between cutting a screen protector and manufacturing tempered glass from raw materials. The process described in Pratham’s post appears to involve cutting protectors to size. It does not establish that the young entrepreneur manufactures tempered glass from scratch. The approach also illustrates how a small business can operate through business-to-business sales. Instead of depending only on individual customers, the entrepreneur supplies nearby mobile shops, which can then sell the products to consumers. Regular retailer orders may help create repeat demand, although the business would still need to maintain product quality, competitive prices and reliable supply. For Pratham, the discovery was a reminder that business opportunities are not always obvious. A conversation that began with a question about managing family finances led him to a small production and supply operation that he had never expected to find so close to home.

‘The best business ideas are hiding right next door’

Pratham summed up the lesson from the encounter with a simple observation: “Sometimes, the best business ideas are hiding right next door.” The post also attracted comments from users who saw the story as an example of entrepreneurship built around a specific need. One user wrote, “You never know the scale of someone’s hustle until you actually hear their story.”Another commented, “This is a great example of how a small business can work when the economics are simple. Low entry cost, fast production, decent margin and repeat B2B customers.” A third user observed, “Simple setup, clear demand, and solid margins. Sometimes the best businesses really are hiding in plain sight.”While the reported earnings cannot be taken as a guarantee of success for anyone entering the same field, the story highlights the importance of understanding local demand before starting a business. A modest machine, a clearly defined product and relationships with nearby retailers can form the foundation of a small enterprise. The most striking part of the account is that the opportunity did not emerge from a complicated business plan or a large investment. It came from identifying a practical need and finding a way to meet it. As Pratham’s conversation suggests, sometimes an ordinary exchange can reveal an entire business model that might otherwise go unnoticed.
