Stand-up comedian Gaurav Gupta faces backlash after calling woman ‘Yadavni’ and mocking her accent during stand-up act

Comedian Gaurav Gupta is facing criticism after a clip from his stand-up show went viral, showing him questioning a woman in the audience about her caste, accent, education and lifestyle. The exchange has divided social media, with some viewers accusing him of humiliating her for laughs, while others say such interactions are part of his crowd-work style. The controversy centres on Gupta addressing the woman as “Yadavni”, a reference to her Yadav background. When she tells him she doesn’t like being called that, he continues the exchange, moving on to her husband, where she studied and the way she speaks English. The clip has since triggered a wider debate about how far comedians should go when joking with people in the audience, especially when the remarks touch on caste and personal circumstances.

What did Gaurav Gupta say to the woman?

In the viral video, Gupta begins by asking the woman her name before referring to her as “Yadavni”. She acknowledges the term but tells him she doesn’t like the sound of it.Gupta responds by asking, “These are your cultural roots, right?”The conversation then turns to her husband, with the comedian saying, “Bania husband hai tumhara (Your husband is a Bania).”He also asks whether she is from abroad or Gurugram. When she says Gurugram, he remarks, “Gurgaon se toh kis cheez ka attitude hai itna (If you are from Gurgaon, what is there to have so much attitude about)?”Gupta then takes aim at her accent, saying, “Aag laga rakhi hai accent aapka, aisa seedha Oxford se yahan land kar gaya hai (Your accent is something else, as if you have landed here straight from Oxford).”When he asks about her schooling, the woman says she studied at Pathways. Gupta continues joking about her accent and the way she speaks. The exchange then moves to her work and lifestyle. He imitates her way of speaking English and questions whether she is financially dependent on her husband.“You are currently spending your husband’s money? Oh my God, then what is this accent about?” he says.He also suggests that she should work at a call centre, adding that she is “wasting her talent by being a housewife”. The clip includes further jokes about her accent and household chores. It was the repeated references to her caste, background and personal life that drew criticism online, particularly from viewers who felt the interaction went on even after she had expressed discomfort.

Internet reacts to Gaurav Gupta’s viral clip

Among those who weighed in was senior IPS officer Arun Bothra, who questioned the idea of making an audience member the butt of a joke.“If your comedy depends on humiliating someone in the audience to make everyone else laugh, it isn’t clever comedy. Making people laugh takes talent. Making one person the joke is easy. The best humour leaves everyone laughing, including the person it is about,” Bothra wrote on X.Other social media users also criticised Gupta, with some arguing that the exchange became uncomfortable after the woman said she did not like being called “Yadavni”.Several reactions focused on the repeated references to caste and accent. Some viewers felt that mocking the way someone speaks or their personal circumstances was less about comedy and more about putting them down in front of an audience. One user also brought up Gupta’s appearance on podcaster Prakhar Gupta’s show, referring to a discussion about how audiences from the Jat community respond to caste-related jokes. The user questioned why such material continued to feature in his performances.Another social media user wrote, “If he talked like that to my partner or a friend, I’d ensure he never gets to speak in public ever again. Wonder how her husband laughed through this entire bit.”Others questioned whether the comedian relied too heavily on caste-based humour. One user even joked about reconsidering a ticket to his Dubai show because of their accent.

    Some viewers defend the comedian

Not everyone agreed with the criticism. Some viewers defended Gupta, saying his audience knows what to expect from his performances and that crowd work often involves spontaneous exchanges and sharp jokes. One user compared attending a comedy show to watching a cricket match, suggesting that people should be familiar with a performer’s style before buying a ticket.Another viewer acknowledged that some comedians rely on insults and personal remarks but still argued that Gupta was better than many others in the field. The differing reactions have brought crowd-work comedy back into the spotlight. For some, the appeal lies in the unpredictable exchanges between comedians and audience members. For others, the format becomes uncomfortable when a person’s caste, accent, profession or financial situation becomes the focus of repeated jokes. The question is not simply whether a comedian can make an audience laugh, but also where the line lies between playful teasing and making one person feel singled out.

Gaurav Gupta’s comedy and caste references

Gupta’s stand-up routines often draw on references to caste and community. The comedian belongs to the Bania community and has also used references to his own background in his comedy. The latest controversy comes months after comedian Pranit More faced criticism over a crowd-work clip from a Gurugram show. In that instance, an audience member made objectionable remarks about a woman he had been on a date with. More was criticised for laughing along rather than challenging the comments. He later apologised, saying he should have called them out. Both incidents have renewed questions about a comedian’s role when an audience interaction turns uncomfortable, and whether the responsibility to draw a line rests with the performer as well as the people watching.
