Thailand’s Phuket, Trang and Songkhla offer heritage-rich coastal escapes, blending Sino-Portuguese architecture, traditional cuisine and dreamy island getaways

Thailand is often imagined in neon nights and island escapes. Yet, step a little away from the usual routes and you’ll find towns where heritage lingers in facades painted in pastel shades, in flavours shaped by Thai kitchens, and in waterfronts that once welcomed travellers from across the seas. These coastal towns carry stories in their architecture, in the morning markets where languages mingle, and in the evening light that falls over lakes and shorelines.Phuket, Trang and Songkhla show this side of Thailand in their own ways. In one place, the morning might begin with the scent of fresh noodles drifting through the old town and in another, with a boat ride into the Emerald Cave, while elsewhere the day winds down beside the lake. Each place is best savoured at an unhurried pace. Each place is best enjoyed without trying to pack too much into a day.Phuket: Where heritage meets island energy

    Phuket (Canva)

Phuket makes a lovely first stop. In Old Phuket Town, Sino-Portuguese shophouses sit alongside street art, cafes and small shops, making it an easy place to spend an afternoon. Visit the Thai Hua Museum, stop by one of the old buildings now turned into restaurants or cafes, or come on a Sunday when Lat Yai Market brings food, stalls and a lively crowd to Thalang Road.Food is very much part of the Phuket experience, with Hokkien noodles and dim sum to Phuket-style kanom jeen, all reflecting the island’s mix of cultural influences. Then, head towards Kata, Karon or Nai Harn, settle into a beachside stay, find a spot for sunset, and let the evening unfold over fresh seafood and the sound of the sea. Phuket’s real appeal lies in that easy switch between a colourful morning in town and a barefoot evening by the water.Trang: Where slow travel feels just right

Trang has a gentler pace. Begin with breakfast, because food is one of the pleasures that makes the province memorable, then make your way towards Kantang, where the mustard-yellow railway station offers one of those wonderfully photogenic stops that feels made for a travel album. Then take a boat out to Ko Muk better known as the Emerald Cave. Snorkel around Ko Chueak and Ko Waen, or spend the day on Ko Kradan, known for its clear waters and sandy shores. Back on land, stop by Na Muen Sri, known for its handwoven cloth and the local weaving traditions that continue to be passed on. You can also see more of the city from one of Trang’s distinctive frog-head tuk-tuks before calling it a day.Songkhla: Where every turn has character

    Songkhla

Songkhla Old Town has its own character. Walk along its historic streets and you will find old facades, street art, cafes and places serving Southern Thai food along the way.Follow the streets towards Samila Beach, an evening here can be as simple as taking in the breeze, watching the changing light or finding dinner by the waterfront before returning to a characterful stay. The nearby Songkhla Lake adds another beautiful setting, while the province’s history as a place of trade and cultural exchange can still be seen in its architecture, cuisine and traditions. What makes Phuket, Trang and Songkhla so captivating is the way each leaves you with a different feeling. Phuket brings the colour and energy of island life, Trang opens the door to slower days, while Songkhla draws you into a world of food, art and waterfront evenings. Together, they offer a side of Thailand that feels wonderfully personal, unexpected and full of little moments worth travelling for.So, when you start planning your next Thailand escape, let curiosity shape the itinerary. Walk through an old quarter, stop when something smells too good to pass on, take a boat out to the islands and make time for one more sunset. Thailand has plenty more waiting beyond the familiar. All you must do is take the trip and find your own favourite corner.
