Diwali cleaning DIY: Reuse old toothbrushes for these hard-to-clean spots

Every Diwali clean-up ends up exposing the same stubborn corners: the grimy grout behind the kitchen sink, the dusty gaps in the window track, the sticky rim of the gas burner. A cloth or mop simply cannot reach them. Meanwhile, the old toothbrush you were about to throw away is sitting in the bathroom, with bristles that are just stiff enough to scrub and just small enough to get into tight spaces. Before it goes into the bin, give it one last job. Here are five hard-to-clean spots where an old toothbrush works better than any fancy tool.

    Tile grout and bathroom corners

Grout lines collect soap scum, mould and dirt faster than any other part of the bathroom. Make a paste of baking soda and a little water, spread it along the grout and let it sit for ten minutes. Scrub in short back-and-forth strokes with an old toothbrush, then wipe with a damp cloth and rinse well. The same method works around taps, drain edges and the base of the toilet. Wear gloves, and keep the room ventilated if you use any cleaner.

Gas stove burners and kitchen knobs

Oil splashes and food spills harden around the burners, knobs and the gaps between the stove top and the platform. Once the stove is cool and the gas is switched off, soak removable parts in warm water with a few drops of dish soap for 20 minutes. Then scrub the holes, grooves and edges with a toothbrush to dislodge baked-on gunk. Clogged burner holes can lead to uneven flames, so clearing them gently matters. Dry every part completely before putting it back.

    Window tracks and door channels

Dust, sand and dead insects pile up in window tracks and sliding door channels, and a Diwali clean is the perfect time to clear them. Start by loosening the dry dirt with the toothbrush, then pick it up with a vacuum or a damp cloth so it does not spread. For sticky patches, dip the brush in warm soapy water and scrub along the track. Wipe dry afterwards. A drop of oil on the track keeps sliding doors moving smoothly.

    Taps, sinks and steel fittings

Water stains and limescale gather around the base of taps, the drain and the edges of the sink, where a sponge cannot reach. Dip the toothbrush in a mix of white vinegar and water, or rub on a little lemon juice, and scrub the build-up gently. Rinse thoroughly afterwards. Avoid using vinegar or lemon on marble or natural stone surfaces, as the acid can damage them. A final wipe with a dry cloth brings back the shine on steel and chrome.

Jewellery, puja items and small decor

Delicate pieces need a gentler touch. Use a soft, clean toothbrush with a little mild soap and lukewarm water to clean carved details on brass diyas, artificial jewellery, photo frames and decorative showpieces. Work in light strokes and avoid pressing hard on fine engraving or painted surfaces. Rinse, then dry immediately with a soft cotton cloth. Keep a separate brush for these items, so that the one used on grout and stoves never touches them.

This article is intended for general informational and household purposes only. Results vary with the type of surface, the level of dirt and individual technique. Test any cleaner on a small, hidden area first and avoid acidic cleaners on marble, natural stone and delicate finishes. Switch off gas and electrical appliances before cleaning, wear gloves, and keep cleaning agents away from children and pets. Replace the toothbrush if the bristles become worn or frayed.
