“God could not be everywhere, so he created mothers!”We often hear this quote and get drenched in a series of thoughts about how mothers selflessly do so much for their children, from giving birth to them to nourishing them, and how they go to great lengths to help them grow up and build a career. One such story is about the relentless hard work of a woman named Ranu Devi, who worked there as a sanitation worker for 26 years, earning a minimal salary at an engineering institute, with one hope in her heart: that her children would have a better future, and now her daughter has completed her PhD from the same institute.
Meet Ranu Devi: The mother who cleaned a campus, and the daughter who earned a PhD there
Ranu Devi worked as a sanitation worker at BIT Mesra, an engineering institute in Ranchi, Jharkhand. According to Prabhat Khabar, she kept up this work for 26 years so that her children could have a better future, earning just ₹400 a week when she started and now earns Rs. 15000 per month; despite the meagre sum, she did not lose hope and continued working relentlessly.Life became harder after her husband passed away, but she continued to take responsibility for educating her three children and worked tirelessly to keep their education going, according to The Better India report.
Her daughter completed her PhD from the same university
Her daughter, Aarti Kumari, grew up watching that effort. Aarti completed her B.Tech at another college, then did her M.Tech at BIT Mesra, and has now earned her PhD in engineering from the same institute, helped by scholarships that eased some of the financial pressure on the family.
The achievement carries extra meaning for her village
Aarti comes from Turup village in Jharkhand and is the first woman from her village to reach this milestone in engineering, according to Better India.Ranu Devi stands as an epitome of hard work and a mother’s relentless drive to support the education her children. The campus where Ranu Devi spent decades keeping corridors clean is the same one where her daughter earned the title “Dr.”. Her mother helped keep the campus running for 26 years, and her daughter has now made history on the very same campus.
