“We didn’t have masala chai but…”: what did Rishi Sunak eat at Delhi’s Bengali Sweet House; owner reveals

Imagine a former British prime minister, a celebrated author and philanthropist, and a Rajya Sabha MP walking straight into your sweet shop just to taste authentic Indian food. Recently, former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak visited the Bengali Sweet House and Pastry Shop in Delhi’s Bengali Market. He was accompanied by his mother-in-law, Rajya Sabha MP Sudha Murty, and fellow MP Swati Maliwal. The visit brought the spotlight back on the decades-old eatery, known for its Indian sweets and street food. For owner Varjesh Aggarwal, welcoming the high-profile guests was a matter of pride. Calling the occasion as an exceptional honour and privilege, he said that Sunak had visited the establishment once before also in 2025. Sudha Murty, on the other hand, was a much more frequent visitor. The owner shared several pictures and videos of the proud moment on their Instagram profile. What did Rishi Sunak eat at the Bengali Sweet House?During their visit, Sunak tried a selection of popular Indian dishes and sweets, including

    • Papdi chaat
    • Aloo tikki
    • Kulhad lassi
    • Rasmalai
    • Laddoos (kesar)
    • Masala chai (arranged at home)

However, one detail made the visit particularly memorable for the shop’s owner. According to Aggarwal, Sunak remembered the kesar laddoos he had tasted during his previous visit and requested them again. Also masala chai was one of the highlights. Since it was not available at the restaurant at that time, Aggarwal arranged for a fresh batch to be prepared at home by his wife. She brought it across the street to the restaurant.Sunak’s return means that his first experience at the shop had left an impression. His familiarity with the menu and his request for the same laddoos showed that the visit was not simply a stop at a famous address, but a return to a place he remembered.Bengali Sweet House in Delhi is a legacy dating back to 1937People living in Delhi are well-aware of the legacy that Bengali Sweet House carries. It is more than a traditional mithai shop. The shop was established in 1937 in Bengali Market (central Delhi). The shop has spent nearly nine decades serving generations of customers, from local families and office-goers to politicians and celebrities.According to the establishment’s official website, its story began with Lala Bhim Sain and Lala Banwari Lal, who arrived in Delhi from Bikaner in 1936. They initially set up shop near the Sessions Court on Ferozeshah Road before opening their Bengali Market outlet the following year.Sharing a video, the account wrote,“Chai, Mithai and a table by the window. We are honoured to welcome Sudha Murthy ji, Rishi Sunak ji and Swati Maliwai ji at Bengali Sweets House and Pastry Shop, Bengali Market, today.”Why Rishi Sunak was in DelhiSunak was in the national capital to attend the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, held from October 13 to 15, 2026. During the visit, he also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 13. But his quick stop at Bengali Sweet House added a more informal moment to a trip otherwise associated with international economic discussions and political engagements. For Aggarwal and his team, hosting Sunak again, alongside Murty and Maliwal, was a significant occasion. The owner’s account of Sunak returning for familiar sweets and asking for masala chai also brought attention to the personal side of hospitality — the small details that can turn a customer’s visit into a lasting memory.Bengali Sweet House has continued to impress consumers. For the establishment, Sunak’s latest visit was another milestone in a journey that began nearly nine decades ago. And for anyone following Delhi’s food scene, the episode offered a simple takeaway: sometimes, even after travelling across the world and occupying one of the highest political offices, the appeal of a favourite Indian sweet remains hard to resist.
