5 reasons some ordinary videos get millions of views online
5 reasons some ordinary videos get millions of views online

Ever come across a random Instagram reel and wondered how it has millions of views? Someone is making tea, a child is having a funny conversation with their parents, or a dog is refusing to move from the sofa. Nothing particularly special is happening, yet people are watching the video over and over again. And then there are creators who spend hours planning, shooting and editing their content but barely get a few hundred views. Strange, isn’t it? Sometimes, the simplest videos are the ones that get people talking, laughing and sharing. So, what makes an ordinary clip so popular? Here are five possible reasons.

    1. They remind people of their own lives

You know those videos that make you immediately think of your mother, sibling or best friend? That’s exactly the kind of connection that can make a simple clip popular. It could be a mother calling her child five times, siblings arguing over the smallest things or a friend who is always late. These are everyday situations, but people recognise them instantly. And once someone sees a video that reminds them of a person they know, sharing it feels almost automatic. They tag their sibling, send it to a friend or drop it into a family WhatsApp group with a message like, “This is literally us.”The video might feature strangers, but the situation feels familiar. That little connection can make people stop scrolling.

    2. They feel like real moments, not performances

Let’s be honest. Social media is full of perfectly edited videos, carefully planned outfits and people trying to get every shot right. So, when a video feels a little messy and unplanned, it can stand out.Think of a child saying something completely unexpected, a grandfather trying a new dish or a family bursting into laughter over a silly joke. The moment doesn’t need perfect lighting or clever camera angles. What makes it enjoyable is the way it unfolds.Of course, some creators plan their content even when it looks spontaneous. But viewers often enjoy videos that feel natural and easy to relate to.Sometimes, the person recording doesn’t even realise that something funny is about to happen. And that is part of the appeal.

    3. They make people feel something

Not every viral video needs to make people laugh. Sometimes, a few seconds of kindness or a small family moment can leave a lasting impression.A child running towards a parent after a long time, an elderly couple teasing each other or a stranger helping someone without expecting anything in return can make people pause for a moment.Different viewers may react differently to the same clip. Someone might find it funny, while another person might be reminded of their own childhood or a loved one. When a video makes people smile, laugh, feel emotional or even watch it again to catch a small detail, they have a reason to stay. Some might share it with friends because they want them to experience that feeling, too.And sometimes, a video doesn’t need a big message. It just needs to make someone feel a little something.

    4. They give people a reason to hit the share button

Think about how you share reels with your friends. You probably don’t send a detailed explanation every time. You simply forward a funny clip because you know someone will relate to it.Ordinary videos often have that kind of appeal. A clip about office struggles might make its way through a group of colleagues. A video about Indian parents might be shared among cousins, while a cute pet video could travel between animal lovers. The best part is that people don’t need to know the creator to enjoy the content. They just need to find the moment funny, interesting or familiar. One person shares it with a friend, that friend sends it to another group, and suddenly, people who have never heard of the original creator are watching the same clip.Of course, not every shared video takes off. But when people have an easy reason to pass it along, its reach can grow well beyond the creator’s followers.

    5. Sometimes, the timing is just right

Ever noticed how a video about Monday morning struggles feels especially relatable at the start of the week? Or how a simple clip of a family celebrating a festival suddenly catches everyone’s attention around that time?Timing can make a difference. A video may connect with something people are already talking about or experiencing, making it feel more relevant when they come across it.Social media recommendations also influence what people see. Platforms use signals such as watch time and interactions to help decide which videos to recommend. If a clip attracts attention, it may reach more viewers who are likely to enjoy it.But there is no guaranteed formula. A video can be posted at the perfect time and still get very few views. Another might sit unnoticed for days before people suddenly start sharing it.That unpredictability is part of what makes viral content so interesting.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
