NEW DELHI: “Little disappointed that I couldn’t lift in my final attempt,” said Lovepreet Singh after narrowly missing out on the gold medal in the men’s +110kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. The Punjab lifter settled for silver after finishing just one kilogram behind New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti, despite breaking the Commonwealth Games snatch record.Lovepreet lifted a total of 388kg, with 176kg in the snatch and 212kg in the clean and jerk. Liti claimed the gold medal with a total of 389kg (166kg in snatch and 223kg in clean and jerk), while England’s Andrew Griffith took bronze with 356kg (165kg in snatch and 191kg in clean and jerk).The 28-year-old improved on his bronze medal from the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham by winning silver this time.“I thought I would win gold after snatch but it was up to god. Little disappointed that I couldn’t lift in my final attempt in clean and jerk, I have lifted more in training,” Lovepreet said after his silver-winning effort.
Lovepreet breaks CWG snatch record
Lovepreet dominated the snatch event from the start. He comfortably lifted 168kg in his opening attempt before clearing 173kg. In his third attempt, he successfully lifted 176kg to set a new Commonwealth Games snatch record, taking a 10kg lead into the clean and jerk.With the crowd cheering “Come on Jatta” and “Come on Singh” at the SEC Armadillo, Lovepreet attempted 217kg in his final clean and jerk lift. The lift would have won him the gold medal and also broken the Games record. He managed to clean the weight but could not complete the jerk.
Who is Lovepreet Singh?
Lovepreet Singh hails from Bal Sikander village in Punjab’s Amritsar district. His father works as a tailor, while his grandfather earned a living by selling vegetables. Encouraged by his family to pursue sports, Lovepreet started weightlifting at the age of 13 at the DAV Ground.
