"I have wasted the best years of my life": Ankur Warikoo shares life-changing advice for a 35-year-old facing a career crisis
Entrepreneur and content creator Ankur Warikoo has sparked a conversation on resilience after sharing his response to a 35-year-old professional facing a career setback. Through practical advice on taking responsibility, learning consistently and focusing on small, actionable steps, Warikoo underscores that rebuilding a meaningful life begins with changing one’s mindset, not dwelling on past mistakes.

What do we fear the most in life? Many would say failure. Others might answer losing someone or something precious. Ironically, failure is something every one of us encounters at some point in life. The child who once feared failing a Class 5 mathematics examination may now be dealing with a string of job interview rejections. As life unfolds, our fears evolve, but failure remains a constant companion. We learn to navigate disappointments, setbacks, and missed opportunities, each leaving behind its own lesson. But does facing failure ever become easy? Every setback leaves a mark. We swallow our tears, put on brave faces, and convince the world that we are fine. Yet our pillows know the sleepless nights, the silent worries, and the weight of unanswered questions. And what happens when that failure arrives not at the beginning, but in the middle of your career, when you thought life was finally beginning to fall into place?Entrepreneur and content creator Ankur Warikoo’s recent post on X has sparked a conversation around this very question. It began with an email that landed in his inbox. It wasn’t from a fresh graduate seeking career advice or a young professional hoping for a salary hike. Instead, it came from a 35-year-old man who believed he had squandered the best years of his life. His story was painfully honest. He had failed in school, dropped out of college, battled alcohol and substance abuse, worked in customer service roles without much direction, suffered from severe anxiety, and was now staring at a layoff with less than a month left before his job came to an end.“I don’t have a graduation degree. I don’t possess strong technical skills. I feel my career progression happened more because of luck than competence,” he confessed. For many reading this, the circumstances may be different. The emotions, however, are likely to feel familiar.Regret has a way of convincing people that they have missed the train, that everyone else has figured life out while they are left behind, trying to make sense of years that seem impossible to reclaim.Warikoo’s response, however, did not begin with sympathy. It began with perspective.

You cannot rewrite yesterday, but you can rewrite tomorrow

His advice was refreshingly free of motivational clichés. Instead of promising overnight success or encouraging the man to “follow his passion,” Warikoo focused on something far more practical.“You can spend time wallowing in your misery and regret over the past 15 years of your life, or you can work to improve the next 30 years of your life,” he wrote. It is a simple sentence, yet one that carries remarkable weight. Most people spend enormous energy replaying mistakes they cannot undo. Failed exams. Wrong careers. Poor financial decisions. Relationships that ended. Opportunities that slipped away. But regret has never changed a single chapter of anyone’s life. But action has.

    Stop staring at the mountain

Perhaps the most powerful line in Warikoo’s response was also the shortest. “Don’t look at the mountain to climb; look at the next step to take.”That is often where people get stuck. Someone wants to switch careers, but they obsess over whether they’ll ever become successful.Someone wants to lose weight but keeps thinking about the 25 kilograms they need to shed.Someone wants to crack a competitive examination but is overwhelmed by the massive syllabus. The mountain becomes so intimidating that they never take the first step. Warikoo urged the man to narrow his focus. Forget the destination for a moment. The immediate task was simple: build the strongest possible résumé and start applying for roles that matched his experience.Perhaps, it is the first step that always matters and rest might flow through.

Learning is less about employment and more about identity

Warikoo’s next piece of advice was perhaps the most underrated. Spend just 15 to 30 minutes every day learning something new. It is not that learning a skill today will help you grab a high package or a lucrative job opportunity tomorrow. But because learning itself changes who you become. All of it counts: A free YouTube lecture, a chapter from a book, an online discussion, and a new skill.Tiny investments, repeated daily, reshape confidence. The goal, Warikoo suggested, is not merely to become employable. It is to become someone who never stops growing. That distinction matters.

Sometimes the smallest detail says the most

Interestingly, Warikoo’s first recommendation had nothing to do with careers or skills. He advised the man to replace an old, quirky email address, one created in his teenage years, with a professional one.Professionalism often reveals itself in small details. An updated résumé. A polished LinkedIn profile. A clear email address. Thoughtful communication.None of these guarantee success. But together, they signal seriousness. And seriousness is often the first step towards transformation.

The two rules that leave no room for escape

Warikoo ended his response with two uncompromising conditions. No complaining and no excuses. If someone truly wants to take responsibility for their life, he argued, these two habits must disappear. That does not mean life is always fair. People lose jobs through no fault of their own. Families struggle, health deteriorates, circumstances can be deeply unequal. But while people cannot always control what happens to them, they can control how they respond.Responsibility begins where excuses end.

A reminder for anyone who feels left behind

There is something deeply human about the email Warikoo received. It is not really about one man. It is about everyone who has ever believed they started too late. The graduate who thinks they chose the wrong degree. The professional trapped in an unfulfilling job. The parent returning to work after years away. The person who spent years battling addiction, illness, or self-doubt.Life is not at all a straight line or wrapped up in a uniform. It comes with different perspectives and experiences.People fail, they drift, they lose time, and they start over. And sometimes, they discover that the years ahead matter far more than the years behind. But, transformation rarely begins with a giant leap. It begins with one deliberate decision: to stop mourning the past, take responsibility for the present, and keep moving, one step at a time. For anyone wondering whether it is too late to rebuild a life, that may be the most important lesson of all.
