Delhi-NCR rain update: What's open, what's closed and areas travellers should avoid today amid orange alert

Delhi NCR woke up to what we call the best rain spell of the season, indicating that the monsoon has arrived in full force. It is important for people travelling across Delhi-NCR today to be prepared for heavy rain, waterlogged roads, traffic disruptions, flight delays and school closures. While the rain showers have brought the much-needed relief from the scorching summer, they have also disrupted travel plans for many.Orange alertMeanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Delhi-NCR. Orange alert is a warning of widespread moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms. As per the latest update, several parts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad and Ghaziabad are likely to continue receiving intermittent rain over the next few days. According to IMD updates, some regions may receive 180-250 mm rainfall within 24 hours. Flooding and waterlogging are some of the major concerns. What’s open?Delhi Airport is operational but passengers are advised to leave for the airport much in advance given the intense rainfall and congestion. Travel advisories have been issued by airlines including Air India and IndiGo warning passengers that bad weather may affect flight schedules. The Delhi Metro continues to operate and remains one of the fastest ways to move around the city during heavy rain. Most tourist attractions, shopping malls, restaurants and markets remain open unless local conditions worsen. What’s closed?Ghaziabad has seen the biggest disruption. Local authorities have ordered the closure of all schools up to Class 12 following heavy rainfall. Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel. In Gurugram, while schools and offices have not been universally shut, authorities have appealed to firms to allow employees to work from home to ensure safety of people.Areas travellers should avoid
