Quote of the day by Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife MacKenzie Scott: "My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But…" - why thoughtful generosity should never be delayed
Quote of the day by Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife MacKenzie Scott

Most people wait until they feel financially secure before giving anything away, telling themselves generosity is something for later. MacKenzie Scott decided against that logic almost immediately after her divorce made her one of the wealthiest women in the world. “My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful,” she wrote. “It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.” It reads like two competing instincts, patience and urgency, refusing to cancel each other out. Coming from someone who has since given away more money, faster, than almost any philanthropist in modern history, the line reads less like an aspiration and more like a plan she has actually kept to.

“My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty”

Understand the meaning behind the quote by MacKenzie Scott

Scott opens by acknowledging that giving well takes real preparation. Understanding communities, vetting organisations properly, working out where money actually helps rather than just feels good, all of that takes time. She is not arguing against careful planning. What she rejects is using that planning as an excuse to delay. “But I won’t wait” is the pivot the whole quote turns on. People facing poverty or crisis right now cannot wait for donors to find a perfect, risk-free solution. The final line, about keeping at it until the safe is empty, pushes back on the instinct to treat wealth as something to be preserved rather than used.

Where this quote actually comes from

Scott wrote this in her Giving Pledge letter in May 2019, only months after her divorce from Amazon founder Jeff Bezos left her with a roughly four per cent stake in the company. Rather than opening with talk of foundations or tax strategy, she began by describing a passage she had underlined years earlier in college, in Annie Dillard’s book The Writing Life, about giving your best effort away freely rather than hoarding it for some later, more important occasion. That detail matters. Scott is a novelist herself, and the philosophy behind her giving traces back to a piece of writing advice rather than a financial strategy. Since signing the pledge, she has given away more than twenty six billion dollars across thousands of gifts through her philanthropic initiative, Yield Giving, typically as unrestricted grants with no lengthy application process attached.

Why urgency matters when helping others

Plenty of social problems persist for years not because nobody cares, but because action keeps getting delayed while people search for the ideal, fully vetted solution. Scott’s quote argues against that pattern directly. Careful thought should not become an excuse for endless hesitation. The same logic applies well outside large-scale philanthropy. People often postpone volunteering or mentoring because they feel they lack enough time or expertise yet. Scott’s point is that meaningful contribution usually starts with something imperfect and sincere, not with waiting for conditions to feel entirely right.

Generosity built on trust, not control

Scott’s approach to giving includes an unusual amount of trust. Rather than attaching heavy restrictions or lengthy reporting requirements to her donations, she has repeatedly chosen to hand organisations the money and let them decide how to use it, on the basis that people working directly with a problem usually understand it better than a distant donor does.Research from the Center for Effective Philanthropy has found that the vast majority of organisations receiving her grants reported real improvements to their long-term financial stability as a result. That is not a small detail. It suggests the trust behind her approach is not just a nice idea, but something that actually changes outcomes for the people receiving it.

Other famous quotes by MacKenzie Scott

    • “Life will never stop finding fresh ways to expose our shared vulnerability. That’s a reason for more solidarity, not less.”
    • “There’s no wrong way to give away a fortune.”
    • “People struggling against inequities deserve center stage in stories about change they are creating.”

    Why this message still resonates

Scott’s approach challenges a common assumption that wealth exists primarily to be protected. She treats it instead as something that only becomes valuable once it is actually used, and her quote makes the same argument for time, effort and attention more generally, not just money. That is really the point worth taking from it. Waiting for the perfect moment to help someone usually just means help arrives later than it needed to. Scott’s line is a reminder that thoughtful and urgent are not opposites. They can, and probably should, happen at the same time.
