East Anglia, a rural region in eastern England, is facing a hosepipe ban after becoming the driest part of the UK. But in one village in Norfolk, people are also preparing for the opposite problem of flooding. At Caistor St Edmund, the ground has become so dry and hard that it feels like walking on a paved road. Farmers have harvested this year’s hay, but the crop is smaller than usual. If rain does not arrive soon, they fear there may not be a second harvest. The long spell of hot, dry weather has forced Anglian Water, a water recycling company, to bring in its first hosepipe ban in 10 years. People have been asked not to use hosepipes for watering gardens, washing cars or filling paddling pools and hot tubs. However, they can still use watering cans.East Anglia is the driest region in the UK. According to Anglian Water, the area received only 39% of its normal rainfall this spring, making it the second driest spring on record. Many rivers are running at very low levels, reservoirs have less water than usual, and record-breaking temperatures have increased water use.“Understandably, customers have wanted to stay cool and have fun in the sun, but the unrelenting conditions are placing the environment and water supplies under increasing strain,” said Dr Geoff Darch, Anglian Water’s head of strategic asset planning, as quoted by the BBC. He urged people to “hang up the hosepipe, let lawns go brown, cars go dirty and use water even more wisely”.

    From drought to floods

Today, people are being asked to save every drop of water. But residents of Caistor St Edmund have not forgotten what happened when there was too much of it.According to The Guardian, the dry weather is very different from what the village experienced in December 2020. Days of heavy rain overwhelmed drains as water rushed off nearby fields. Roads turned into fast-moving streams of muddy water, homes flooded despite sandbags, and volunteers worked to keep drains clear. Residents say it was the worst flooding they had seen.To reduce the risk of another flood, four wooden structures have now been built along Wash Lane, where the watercourse is currently dry. These structures are called leaky dams or logjams. They do not block the water completely, but slows it down. During heavy rain, they also trap branches and other natural materials, helping slow the flow before the water reaches roads and homes.

Beavers are called ecosystem engineers because they naturally reshape rivers and wetlands by building dams.

    Learning from Beavers

Norfolk County Council has spent more than £35,000 on the project. The idea is inspired by beavers, often called ecosystem engineers because they naturally reshape rivers and wetlands by building dams. When beavers cut down trees and build dams, they slow the movement of water and create small ponds. These ponds also become breeding sites for wildlife such as dragonflies and amphibians, including frogs, toads and newts.Norfolk has a small number of released beavers, and some have bred successfully, but none live near this village. The wooden leaky dams are designed to copy the way beaver dams work and provide similar flood-control benefits. The project reflects a growing need to prepare for more extreme weather, with long dry spells followed by periods of heavy rain. While the leaky dams are expected to reduce flood risk, there are also plans for a large solar development in nearby fields. This could change rainwater runoff, the way rainwater moves across the ground before reaching streams and drains.
