Think before you type: 5 things you should never share with AI chatbots
Avoid sharing these details with AI, no matter how helpful it seems.

It usually starts with a harmless question. You ask an AI chatbot to draft an email, explain a legal term, summarize a document, or help you plan a trip. A few minutes later, you’re pasting screenshots, uploading files, or typing in details about your finances, work, or personal life without giving it much thought. As AI becomes a bigger part of everyday life, it’s easy to forget that convenience and caution should go hand in hand. Just because a chatbot can help with a task doesn’t mean it needs access to every detail about you. Here are five things that are better left out of your conversations with AI.

    Passwords and verification codes

If you’re trying to fix a login problem or troubleshoot an account, it’s easier to copy and paste everything into the chat. That’s one shortcut you should never take.Your passwords, PINs, one-time passwords (OTPs), and security answers are meant to stay private. An AI assistant doesn’t need them to explain why an account isn’t working or how to reset a password. If you need help, describe the issue instead of sharing the actual credentials.

    Banking and payment information

People often use AI to understand bank statements, create budgets, or make sense of financial documents. That’s perfectly reasonable, but your account details don’t need to be part of the conversation. Before uploading anything, remove sensitive information such as account numbers, card details, CVV numbers, UPI IDs linked to your finances, or other payment credentials. The chatbot only needs enough information to answer your question, not your entire financial profile.Documents such as passports, Aadhaar cards, PAN cards, driving licences, or tax records contain a lot of personal information in one place. If you’re asking AI to explain a form or help you understand a document, avoid uploading the original file unless necessary. Instead, hide details like document numbers, addresses, signatures, and dates of birth before sharing.A little extra effort can go a long way in protecting your identity.

    Confidential office information

AI has become a useful workplace tool. Many people use it to improve presentations, rewrite emails, brainstorm ideas, or organize reports. But not every office document belongs in a chatbot.Internal business strategies, client information, financial reports, product plans, or confidential meeting notes should stay within your organization. If you need writing or editing help, replace company names and sensitive details with placeholders before sharing the content. It’s a simple habit that helps protect both you and your workplace.

    Someone else’s personal information

Not everything you know is yours to share.Maybe a friend has sent you their phone number, a colleague has shared a personal issue, or a family member has forwarded an important document. Even if you have that information, it doesn’t automatically mean it should be copied into an AI chatbot. If your question involves another person, leave out details that could identify them unless you have a clear reason and their permission.Thumb image: Canva (for representative purposes only)
