Bengaluru couple’s 5 money rules go viral; their ‘spend on life, not image’ mantra strikes a chord
Their practical financial habits are winning praise on social media.

Money advice is everywhere these days, but the conversations getting the most attention are often the simplest ones. Instead of talking about expensive lifestyles or quick ways to build wealth, many people are sharing the everyday habits that help them manage their finances better. A Bengaluru couple has now gone viral after opening up about the money rules they follow at home, and many social media users say the approach feels practical and relatable.Megha and Shubham, who run the Instagram account @the12absproject, recently shared a video explaining the five financial principles they live by. The couple, who have a toddler, a pet dog, and two full-time jobs, said these are the rules that have helped their family manage money in a way that works for them.

Rule 1: Spend on what adds value to your life

The couple believes there is a difference between spending to enjoy life and spending to impress others.Explaining their first rule, Shubham said, “Spend on our life, not our image. We never spend money to show off, but we spend freely on what genuinely makes us happy. No fancy cars, no branded clothes, no jewelry that just goes into a locker.”Megha added that they do not compromise on their home or the residential society where they live because that is where they spend most of their time and where they are raising their daughter.

Rule 2: Make memories instead of collecting things

For the couple, experiences always take priority over buying more possessions.Sharing this thought, Shubham said, “Memories over things. Every single time.”Megha said they make it a point to take an international trip every summer. They also plan several staycations during the year and visit their parents whenever needed, especially during festivals.

Rule 3: Don’t compromise on health

Their third financial rule is to keep investing in health and fitness.Talking about this, Shubham said, “Fitness is non-negotiable. If we stay fit now, we don’t have to spend lakhs on clearing hospital bills later.”Megha added, “Clean eating, better products, gym memberships, and no compromises. No, we’ll start again next month. Our body is the longest investment we’ll ever make.”

Rule 4: Grow investments every year

The couple also aims to invest more every year than they did the previous year.According to Megha, they carefully plan both short-term and long-term financial goals. She summed up their thinking by saying, “The number on our investment portfolio matters more than the car standing outside our house.”

Rule 5: Share the financial responsibilities

The last rule is about splitting responsibilities instead of leaving everything to one person.Megha handles fixed monthly expenses such as rent, utility bills, and salaries of domestic workers. Shubham looks after other expenses, including credit card bills, groceries, and travel.Concluding the video, Shubham said, “These aren’t perfect rules, but these are ours,” while Megha added, “And this is what has worked for our family so far.”

The internet found the advice relatable

The couple posted the video with the caption, “Here are the 5 money rules keeping us sane as a millennial family in Bengaluru.”Many people appreciated their approach in the comments section. One user wrote, “Spending on life, not image – such a refreshing mindset.” Another commented, “Not perfect rules, but definitely practical for modern couples.” A third user said, “This is inspiring,” while another added, “Loved how they divide expenses.”Disclaimer: This article is based on a social media post and online reactions.
