‘Jana Nayagan’ fever goes global: Japanese fans in kimonos attend Thalapathy Vijay’s FDFS in Chennai

The release of ‘Jana Nayagan’, the final film starring Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, turned into a grand celebration across Tamil Nadu on Thursday. While thousands of fans gathered outside theatres for the first-day-first-show, two visitors from Japan became the centre of attention with their unique tribute to the actor. The women arrived outside Chennai’s Rohini Cinema dressed in traditional kimonos. They also carried Japanese fans and proudly displayed customised posters dedicated to Vijay. The posters carried by the duo read, “Greatest of the Time Thalapathy Japan Fans.” Clips of the fans celebrating outside the theatre soon spread across social media.

Opening day celebrations resemble a festival

The release of ‘Jana Nayagan’ witnessed massive celebrations across several theatres. Fans organised drum performances, decorative displays, banners and cut-outs to welcome Vijay’s final film. For many admirers, the film is more than just another theatrical release. It marks the conclusion of Vijay’s acting career before he fully dedicates himself to public service following his entry into politics and his tenure as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Huge expectations surround Vijay’s farewell film

Trade experts had predicted a strong opening for ‘Jana Nayagan’, pointing to Vijay’s loyal fan base and the historic significance of his final appearance on the big screen. Directed by H. Vinoth, ‘Jana Nayagan’ features Pooja Hegde opposite Vijay, while Bobby Deol plays the principal antagonist. The ensemble cast also includes Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, Mamitha Baiju, Narain, and several other prominent actors in important roles. The film’s music has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander. Its songs and background score had already gained popularity before the theatrical release, adding to the anticipation surrounding the project.

Mixed reviews for ‘Jana Nayagan’

Meanwhile, mixed reviews are pouring in for the film. A Tweet read, “I watched #BhagavanthKesari (2023) right after watching #LEO (2023). I enjoyed Bhagavanth Kesari in parts, though not completely. That said, #JanaNayagan, which is a partial remake of Bhagavanth Kesari, is an above-average political action thriller. The title card sequence is very good.” Another one wrote, “Overall, JANA NAYAGAN is an above-average political action thriller that is elevated by THALAPATHY Vijay‘s screen presence and entertaining sequences, but held back by an uneven screenplay and an uninteresting villain track. As THALAPATHY Vijay’s final film, it still offers fans enough to make it a worthwhile watch.”
