For months, the conversation around NEET-UG 2026 has centred on the paper leak controversy, the re-examination, OMR disputes and the continuing student protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. This week, however, the spotlight shifted to an unexpected voice — the candidate who secured All India Rank (AIR) 2.Panshul Bansal, who scored 715 out of 720 in the NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, recently explained why he chose not to join the protests following the cancellation of the original examination. Instead of ending the debate, his remarks triggered a fresh wave of discussion across social media platforms, with many aspirants questioning whether high-ranking students should remain detached from issues affecting the wider student community.

‘Why should I protest? I could be studying’

Speaking in an interview after the declaration of results, Panshul Bansal said he viewed the cancellation of the original examination as an opportunity to improve rather than a reason to protest.“Why should I go to the protest? Instead, I could be studying at home and improving my skills and improving my score,” he said, adding that he had used the additional preparation period to improve his performance from around 706 marks in the original examination to 715 in the re-exam.

NEET AIR 2 Panshul Bansal’s protest remark sparks debate among aspirants over exam controversy

His remarks came at a time when student-led demonstrations over the alleged NEET paper leak and examination irregularities continue across the country. Protesters have been demanding greater transparency in the conduct of competitive examinations, accountability for alleged lapses and systemic reforms. Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk continues his indefinite hunger strike in solidarity with the protesting students, while demonstrations at Jantar Mantar have entered another month.

AIR 1 took a different view

The discussion gathered further momentum because NEET-UG 2026 AIR 1 Aryan Gupta struck a noticeably different tone while speaking about the controversy.Aryan described the situation surrounding the examination as unfair and said that protest and dissent are “essential parts of democracy.” He also expressed hope that the concerns raised by students would lead to meaningful reforms so that similar controversies do not recur.Although neither topper criticised the other, their contrasting responses have become part of a wider conversation among aspirants about individual success, civic responsibility and the role of students during a national education crisis.

Reddit discussion reflects a divided student community

Soon after clips of Panshul’s interview began circulating online, a discussion on Reddit’s r/MEDICOreTARDS community attracted significant engagement. The original post questioned why the AIR 2 holder chose not to support the protests even after the examination process concluded. The author argued that while preparing for the examination was understandable, publicly distancing himself from the movement disappointed many students who believed the protests represented the interests of lakhs of aspirants. The discussion quickly drew hundreds of reactions. While many users criticised what they saw as an overly individualistic approach, others defended Panshul’s right to focus entirely on his preparation. One user wrote, “Because it affects you and literally everyone currently in the Indian education system.”Another took the opposite view, commenting, “I agree with him. Why should he protest? Don’t try to push everyone into this.”Several users also contrasted the public positions of AIR 1 and AIR 2, saying the two toppers had approached the controversy differently despite achieving almost identical scores.

A debate bigger than one interview

The reactions are about more than a single statement. They reflect the emotional landscape that has surrounded NEET-UG 2026 since allegations of a paper leak first emerged. The controversy led to the cancellation of the original examination, a nationwide re-examination involving more than 20 lakh candidates, multiple court proceedings, continuing protests, OMR-related complaints after the results and repeated demands for greater transparency from the National Testing Agency.Against that backdrop, the remarks of two of the country’s highest-ranked medical aspirants have become symbolic of a larger divide within the student community. For some, the priority after the cancellation was to return to their books and make the most of a second opportunity. For others, remaining silent while the examination system itself was under question was never an option. The discussion now unfolding across Reddit and other social media platforms suggests that, for many aspirants, the legacy of NEET-UG 2026 will not be defined only by ranks and scores. It will also be remembered for the questions it raised about fairness, accountability and what students expect from one another when the credibility of one of India’s biggest entrance examinations comes under unprecedented scrutiny.
