Born in Japan in 1914, Mieko Kamiya grew up in an intellectually rich environment, living for periods in Switzerland and the United States. She spoke multiple languages and eventually became a psychiatrist, researcher, and translator.Her life’s work was defined by her time treating patients with Hansen’s disease, commonly known as leprosy, at the Nagashima Aiseien Sanatorium in Japan.
