At what age do children start forming lifelong memories? Here’s what science says

At what age do children start forming lifelong memories? Here's what science says

Most adults can vividly remember their first day at school, a family holiday or the birthday when they finally got the bicycle they had been dreaming of. But ask someone about their second birthday, or the lullaby their parents sang when they were a baby, and the memories usually disappear into a blur. So, when do children actually start forming memories that stay with them for life? The answer is more fascinating than you might think. According to scientists, babies begin creating memories far earlier than most people realise. The reason we can’t recall many of them has less to do with memory itself and more to do with how the developing brain stores and retrieves those experiences. Scroll down to read more…

Babies start making memories almost from birth

Long before they can speak, babies are learning from the world around them. They recognise familiar voices, remember faces and even anticipate routines. Research suggests that infants as young as six months can retain simple memories for short periods, and by their first birthday, those memories can last much longer.

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

    Brain

This doesn’t mean they’ll remember being rocked to sleep or their first taste of mashed bananas decades later. Instead, these early memories help babies learn, recognise loved ones and make sense of their environment. Studies have shown that memory begins developing in infancy, even though its earliest forms are very different from the autobiographical memories adults rely on.

Why don’t we remember being babies?

This phenomenon has a name: infantile amnesia. Most people remember very little, if anything, from the first two to three years of life. Even memories from ages three to seven are often patchy and incomplete. Scientists believe this happens because the brain regions responsible for forming lasting autobiographical memories, particularly the hippocampus and parts of the prefrontal cortex, are still maturing during early childhood.Young children are constantly creating memories, but many of those memories are either reorganised or become difficult to access as the brain develops.

Lifelong memories usually begin around age 3

Research suggests that people’s earliest lasting memories typically date back to around 3 to 3½ years of age, although there’s plenty of variation from person to person.

Some individuals recall experiences from age two, while others have no clear memories until age five. Factors such as language development, emotional significance, repeated storytelling and family conversations all influence which memories survive.Interestingly, children whose parents often talk about past experiences tend to develop richer and more detailed autobiographical memories. Recounting family events, looking through old photographs and encouraging children to describe what happened during their day all help strengthen memory over time.

    Emotions play a powerful role

Not every childhood moment has an equal chance of lasting. Experiences that are emotionally meaningful, surprising or frequently revisited are much more likely to become lifelong memories. A sibling being born, moving to a new home, celebrating a memorable festival or taking a special holiday often leaves a stronger imprint than an ordinary afternoon at the park. Scientists believe emotion acts like a highlighter for the brain, making certain experiences easier to store and retrieve years later.

Early memories still matter, even if we can’t recall them

The fact that adults can’t consciously remember infancy doesn’t mean those early years are forgotten by the brain. Early experiences shape language, emotional development, social bonds and learning in profound ways. The warmth of a caregiver’s voice, consistent affection and everyday interactions help build the brain’s architecture, influencing how children think, learn and relate to others as they grow.In other words, babies may not remember those moments the way adults remember childhood birthdays, but those experiences continue to shape them long after the memories themselves have faded.
