We live in a time when so much parenting advice pushes mothers and fathers to become their kid’s “best friend.” But former First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama sees it differently. In her view, chasing that kind of closeness can actually backfire. She shared her thoughts in a 2022 interview, and it’s the kind of idea that sticks with you. A parent’s job, she says, isn’t to be liked all the time. It’s to get their kids ready for the real world and sometimes that means letting them feel disappointed, frustrated, or treated unfairly.

How do you teach children about money and financial responsibility?

“Once you decide you want your child to be your friend, now you’re worried about them liking you,” she said. “And there’s so much of parenting that has nothing to do with them liking you.”It’s a message a lot of parents probably need to hear right now. No kid enjoys rules, boundaries, or consequences. But those unglamorous moments are often exactly what shapes a kid into a resilient adult.

One of the sharpest points Obama made was about letting children actually sit with uncomfortable emotions instead of a parent rushing in to smooth things over. “Your kids have to learn how to live in their unhappiness, and they have to learn it in their house,” she said.“Their first bout of unfairness can’t be at school or when they’re 30.” That’s really the crux of it. If a parent is always swooping in to rescue a child from disappointment, settling every argument, or clearing every obstacle out of the way, that child is going to struggle badly the first time they have to face something hard alone.Because life isn’t fair. Friendships fall apart, exams go badly, promotions get handed to someone else, people disagree with you. And learning how to handle all of that starts way before adulthood.Home, Obama seems to be saying, should be the place where kids get to practice feeling those hard emotions while still knowing, without question, that they’re loved.

Sometimes being a good parent means being the ‘bad’ guy

A lot of parents dread upsetting their kids. Saying no to more screen time, making them study, refusing to buy something they want, it’s easy to feel guilty about all of it. Michelle Obama seems to think that guilt just comes with the territory. Because if a parent is constantly trying to stay in their child’s good graces, they’ll eventually start avoiding the hard conversations and the necessary discipline, just to dodge being disliked. But good parenting was never meant to be a popularity contest. It’s about setting boundaries, building responsibility, and equipping kids with skills they’ll still need long after they’ve moved out.Kids might not love those decisions in the moment. But most of them come around to understanding why, years down the line.

Let kids fight their own battles sometimes

Obama also opened up about how she handled fights between her two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and her approach isn’t what you’d expect. Rather than jumping in to referee every squabble, she made a point of staying out of most of them. “I didn’t mediate in between them,” Obama said on another episode of her podcast ‘IMO’, which she co-hosts with her brother, Craig Robinson.“I was like, ‘I love you both, and if I don’t know who was wrong, don’t ask me to get in it.'” Instead of playing judge, she pushed her daughters to sort things out on their own. But if she was forced to step in, both girls paid the price. “I don’t want to play favorites,” she explained. “I’m not sure who’s telling the truth. So, if I’m involved… play is shut down, doors closed, computers off, it’s over.”That approach, she says, is exactly what pushed Malia and Sasha to work through their own conflicts. “Eventually, they’d figure it out because they wanted to keep playing.”

What every parent can take from Michelle’s opinion

Michelle Obama’s take on parenting isn’t cold or distant. It’s really about finding the balance between love and responsibility. Kids obviously need affection and encouragement. But they also need limits, accountability, and the chance to work through problems on their own.Parents don’t have to run in and fix everything the second a child gets upset. Sometimes just listening is enough. And sometimes, letting a child figure it out on their own teaches them more than any lecture ever could. The point was never to raise a child who’s happy every second of every day. It’s to raise one who knows how to face life’s disappointments with confidence and come out the other side okay.As Michelle Obama puts it, being loved by your kids matters. But trying to be their friend at the expense of teaching life’s harder lessons might leave them less ready for what’s waiting outside the front door.
