Sports is the central pillar of India's development agenda

The Khelo India mission sets a clear and ambitious goal: India must emerge as one of the world’s top 10 sporting nations by 2036 and break into the top five by 2047. By aligning these milestones with the Viksit Bharat vision and the centenary of Independence, the mission elevates sport beyond the pursuit of medals, positioning it as a central pillar of India’s national development agenda. The Union Budget’s 18% increase in sports spending for FY 2026-27, compared with the new 10-year Khelo India mission, reinforces that shift. It frames a future Olympic bid not as an isolated sporting aspiration, but as a statement of India’s economic confidence, institutional maturity, and nation-building ambitions.A case in point: The recent shift in budget momentum that saw the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports allocation rise by 18% to Rs 4,479.88 crore for 2026-27 (from a revised Rs 3,346.54 crore in 2025-26) was one of the sharpest year-on-year jumps in the ministry’s history. At a time when unemployment continues to be a larger subject of discussion across the country’s public and private sectors, this governmentpushed thought-bubble around development of the sports sector in the coming decade certainly has a larger connotation. Investing in sport simultaneously addresses youth engagement, employment generation, health and fitness, while nurturing a new economy sector.Deloitte-Google’s “Think Sports” report projects India’s sports market at US$130 billion by 2030, growing at 14% CAGR — nearly double India’s GDP growth rate. The same report projects 10.5 million jobs and US$21 billion in indirect tax revenue by 2030.From the above budget allocation, the Sports Authority of India will receive Rs 917.38 crore, the National Sports Federations (NSFs) Rs 425 crore, and Khelo India itself Rs 924.35 crore — spread across training centres, coaching, sports science and grassroots competitions (Khel Mahakumbhs).Where cricket is concerned, the sport broke all its past barriers in these recent five years, bringing close to Rs 4,600 crore to the table through the initiation of Women’s Premier League (WPL) – a first of its kind T20 league for women that stood on the pillars of gender equality and equal pay.The IPL, through sale of media rights – where internet rights went past the traditional television rights value to create a record-breaking revenue cycle – underlined the larger idea of Digital Bharat. However, cricket aside, it is the non-cricketing space where the tide has really been turning, even if gradually. While dedicated sports-only Private Equity data – especially outside of cricket – remains thin and fragmented, the broader Indian PE and venture capital activity remains deep, giving sports-adjacent sectors (technology, infrastructure, media, D2C sportswear, apparel) a large domestic capital pool to draw from.Privately run sports leagues like kabaddi, football, volleyball, table tennis and hockey are building independent sponsorship and merchandise streams, reducing — even if only marginally — cricket’s near-total share of commercial revenue, underlining future potential.Sustained double-digit growth compounds quickly. With the sports economy projected to grow at 13–14% annually — comfortably ahead of nominal GDP growth — the sector is steadily becoming a more meaningful contributor to India’s economy. India already exports 60% of the sporting goods it manufactures, with the sector employing close to half a million people directly.Any flipsides to the narrative? The northern sectors across Jalandhar (Punjab) and Meerut (UP) alone account for 75 to 80% of national production. And while it represents the idea of a cluster-economy story, it is also a concentration risk worth flagging to make way for a diversification opportunity.Technology and artificial intelligence represent another major opportunity. The space is projected to go past the US$1b Indian market by 2030 at a 19% CAGR, if the DeloitteGoogle report is to go by, covering fan-engagement platforms, performance analytics and broadcast automation. The country’s existing strengths in software and analytics are already a shot in the arm for export of sports-tech services, a practice the cricket industry has begun to embrace already. Here, the government’s broader AI mission further carries a five-year outlay of a billion dollars (approx. Rs 10,300 cr) that can push forward newer initiatives.Last but not the least, is the focus on modern-day sports infrastructure. The growing need to promote sport across the length and breadth of the country for various reasons is only going to accelerate infrastructure growth. The 2030 Commonwealth Games could do a lot more to Ahmedabad than what the 1982 Asiad and the 2010 Commonwealth Games did to New Delhi, where infrastructure growth is concerned. In Mumbai, the Maharashtra government’s clarion call to have more stadiums on the outskirts of the city. The state of Odisha’s remarkable progress in sports and sporting infrastructure over the last decade. The alarming rate at which private investors are eyeing sports infrastructure growth for business opportunities around the country – can all be potential catalysts serving a larger thought. The Indian sports economy, at this point, is a swirling ocean. It is time to adjust the sails and move forward.
