    Mission Aagaman decoded: How Skyroot's Vikram-1 made history
    New Delhi, July 21 (IANS) India’s first privately developed orbital rocket Vikram‑1 reaching orbit marks a structural shift in India’s space sector from a state monopoly to a “multi-actor space ecosystem”, a new report has said.

    On July 18, 2026, Skyroot Aerospace’s Vikram-1 lifted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, and placed its payloads into a nearly 450-km orbit about 15-17 minutes after liftoff. The mission, called Aagaman (Sanskrit for “arrival”), was the maiden flight of Vikram-1, India’s first privately developed orbital-class launch vehicle. With this launch, India became the third country in the world, after the United States and China, to have private orbital launch capability. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Skyroot Aerospace on the achievement, and IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka called it “an India moment.”

    Breaking it down

    Until recently, only government agencies like ISRO could design, build and launch orbital rockets in India. Vikram-1 changes this. It is a rocket built entirely by a private Indian company, Skyroot Aerospace, from design to manufacturing to final assembly. The rocket is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, considered the father of India’s space programme.Think of it like this: ISRO’s PSLV and GSLV are like government-run trains that carry satellites into space on fixed schedules. Vikram-1 is Skyroot’s attempt to offer a “cab” service instead, a smaller, faster, on-demand ride for small satellites that need to reach specific, customised orbits quickly.Vikram-1 is not India’s first private rocket. That distinction belongs to Vikram-S, a smaller, single-stage suborbital rocket launched by Skyroot in November 2022 under Mission Prarambh. Vikram-1 goes a step further. It is a full orbital vehicle, meaning it can carry a satellite all the way into Earth orbit rather than just touching the edge of space and coming back down.

    The mechanism

    Vikram-1 is a four-stage rocket, roughly 20-24 metres tall, built mostly from carbon-composite materials to keep it light. Its stages are:

    1. Three solid-fuel stages, named Kalam-1200, Kalam-250 and Kalam-100 after former President and rocket scientist Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. These provide the initial thrust to climb out of the atmosphere.
    2. A liquid-fuelled Orbital Adjustment Module (OAM), the final stage, which uses a 3D-printed engine. Unlike solid stages that fire once, the OAM can start, stop and restart in space, allowing precise, last-mile placement of satellites into their target orbit.

    The rocket is designed to carry payloads of up to 350 kg to a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) of about 450 km. On its debut flight, it carried technology demonstration payloads from companies such as Grahaa Space, Cosmoserve Space and Germany’s DCUBED, along with symbolic cargo including a handwritten postcard from PM Modi and a lab-grown diamond artwork.Aagaman was described as a test flight, the first of three planned development flights meant to validate the rocket before Skyroot begins regular commercial launches.

    Relevant bodies, laws and policies

    • ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation): India’s national space agency. For Vikram-1, ISRO supported the private mission with facilities such as motor casting, liquid engine testing, trajectory analysis and use of its launchpad at Sriharikota.
    • IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre): An autonomous, single-window nodal agency under the Department of Space, set up in 2020. It authorises and regulates private sector space activities in India, including granting launch clearance to companies like Skyroot.
    • Department of Space (DOS): The nodal central government department overseeing India’s space programme, under which both ISRO and IN-SPACe function.
    • Indian Space Policy, 2023: This policy formally opened up the space sector to private participation across the full value chain, from building satellites and launch vehicles to providing launch services, with ISRO focusing more on research, exploration and technology development.
    • NewSpace India Limited (NSIL): A public sector undertaking under DOS that commercially markets ISRO’s technologies and enables production of launch vehicles through Indian industry.

    Significance for India

    Vikram-1’s success is a milestone for India’s space sector reforms that began after 2020, when the sector was opened to private players. It signals that Indian private companies can now compete in the global small-satellite launch market, which is growing rapidly as demand for earth observation, communication and technology demonstration satellites increases. A successful private launch ecosystem can also let ISRO focus its own resources on larger strategic missions such as the Gaganyaan human spaceflight programme, planetary exploration and heavier launch vehicles, while private players handle smaller, more frequent commercial launches. Skyroot, founded in 2018 and based in Hyderabad, is one of India’s leading space-tech startups and had earlier achieved the milestone of Vikram-S in 2022.
