Sean Astin, best known for playing Samwise Gamgee in Peter Jackson‘s acclaimed ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, has revealed a surprising detail about his financial status after starring in the hit film franchise. The actor, who played a supporting role of Sam opposite Mr Frodo, made waves online when he alleged that he was forced to sell his house, despite the film’s blockbuster success.In an interview with The Guardian, Astin reflected on the realities of working on the Oscar-winning trilogy, explaining, “I was not prepared for that level of visibility and access.” Astin shared his financial status at the time and revealed, “And there was a disconnect between the attention that I was getting and how much money we had. It was not a lot of money! In fact, I had to sell my house because I negotiated such a small amount on the trilogy.“‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy that gave way to the ‘Hobbit’ spin-off and ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ series, became a global phenomenon, grossing approximately USD 2.9 billion at the worldwide box office between 2001 and 2003.Opening up about how his financial situation has improved significantly over the years, he admitted, “I am very comfortable financially now.”Unlike many major franchises, Peter Jackson reportedly filmed all three The Lord of the Rings movies simultaneously in New Zealand. While the ambitious production strategy helped bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic to life, it also meant the cast had no opportunity to renegotiate their salaries if the first film became a box office success.Astin’s co-star Elijah Wood, who portrayed Frodo Baggins, previously spoke about the arrangement to Business Insider. He explained, “Because we weren’t making one movie and then renegotiating a contract for the next, it wasn’t the sort of lucrative scenario that you could sort of rest easy for the rest of your life.”He added that New Line Cinema took a significant financial gamble by committing to all three films at once. “The benefit of that was that we were also signing up for something that was going to be a part of our lives forever,” Wood said.Astin has previously revealed that he earned approximately USD 75,000 per film, bringing his total compensation for the trilogy to roughly USD 250,000. Actor Orlando Bloom, who played Legolas, told The Howard Stern Show in 2019 that he received USD 175,000 for all three films.
