    Every place, country, city or town has its unique landmark that visitors seek out. For example, Rome in Italy has Trevi Fountain where people toss coins and make a wish. In Prague, they touch historic statues for luck. But in Hungary’s capital, Budapest, travellers line up for hours just to rub the belly of a happy-looking bronze statue of a policeman. And they do so because it is believed to bring good luck, prosperity, happiness and safe journeys.Who is this Fat Policeman In Budapest, it is simply known as the Fat Policeman Statue. It’s a quirky bronze figure which has become one of Budapest’s most photographed attractions. Even from far, you can see his shiny rounded belly which shimmers like polished gold. It shines because thousands of hands touch it every year in the hope of receiving a little luck.A travel superstition or not, this smiling policeman statue has become a delightful ritual for visitors exploring Budapest.     The statue stands in the heart of Budapest, at the corner of Zrínyi Street (Zrínyi utca) and Október 6 Street (Október 6. utca). For more precise location, it’s just a short walk from St. Stephen’s Basilica. The statue can be located easily as visitors can also reach here from the iconic Chain Bridge.The reason behind the belly rub The biggest attraction isn’t the statue itself but the tradition surrounding it. As per local belief, rubbing the policeman’s belly brings good luck and financial prosperity. It also means safe travels. Some locals also jokingly say it ensures you’ll return to Budapest one day, and another legend claims it prevents you from gaining weight.     Affectionately known as the “Fat Policeman,” the bronze sculpture is a life-sized figure depicting a jovial Hungarian policeman. He is wearing a ceremonial uniform inspired by the early 20th century. He also wears a helmet to complete the look. Rather than celebrating law enforcement, the statue captures a humorous side of the city.The present sculpture credits Hungarian sculptor András Illyés and notes the present bronze work was unveiled in 2008.How to reach the statue
