Psychology says people who dress extravagantly at work may not be showing off but revealing something deeper about themselves

Being dressed in a well-fitted suit or a pair of polished shoes when entering an office could sometimes result in certain impressions from others. For some, it might be taken as a sign of confidence and ambitions or just an attempt to make a good impression. However, the dress code in the workplace is never as straightforward. One’s choice of clothes could affect their mood, reactions of others, and one’s positioning in the workplace. While some office workers tend to dress according to the norms, there are those who purposely go against them.

How office attire affects confidence, focus, and identity

Clothing has long been linked with behaviour and perception. The study SageChoice published in PubMed, titled ‘Dress is a Fundamental Component of Person Perception’ reveals what people wear can affect not only how others judge them but also how they approach their own work. Formal clothing has been associated with changes in confidence, concentration, and the way people handle complex tasks.A person who puts effort into their appearance may not simply be trying to impress others. The process of dressing carefully can create a sense of preparation and control before entering a demanding environment. For some workers, a structured outfit acts almost like a mental switch, separating personal time from professional responsibilities. However, the impact of dressing formally depends heavily on the surroundings. A person wearing a suit in an office where everyone dresses casually may send a different message from someone wearing the same outfit in a traditional corporate setting. Clothing does not exist in isolation; it is interpreted against the expectations of the workplace.

When standing out becomes a sign of confidence

Interestingly, being less formal than everyone else can sometimes create a stronger impression. Social psychologists have described this as the “red sneakers effect” , the idea that breaking an established dress expectation can make someone appear more confident or capable according to the research published in Journal of Consumer Research, titled ‘The Red Sneakers Effect: Inferring Status and Competence from Signals of Nonconformity Get access Arrow’.The concept comes from research examining how people react to individuals who deliberately ignore social conventions. In one example, participants viewed descriptions of professors with different appearances. A casually dressed academic was often rated more positively when the setting was a prestigious institution where formal clothing was expected. It is not the fact that casual attire is going to command respect automatically. Rather, it is the difference in perception created by the attitude of the individual. For example, an individual dressed in jeans and a T-shirt in a formal setting will be viewed differently from an individual in casual wear in a setting where everybody is dressed up the same way. This is because in such cases, it is not clear whether it is due to lack of effort or a conscious decision to go against the majority.

The difference between intentional and careless appearance

The significance of clothing selections also relies on how intentional the selections seem to be. There is an obvious difference in the way a laid back choice reflects personality as opposed to someone being dressed for the occasion.Designer hoodies, bizarre accessories or shoes might show a creative and confident personality when worn by someone who looks at ease. The impression would be completely different if the outfit appeared to be put together randomly. This distinction explains why workplace style can be difficult to interpret. People are not only reacting to clothes themselves but also trying to understand what those choices represent.

Why appearance creates pressure at work

The ResearchGate analysis titled ‘Appearance between professionalism and work-related stress among marketing employees’ reveals that while clothing can be a source of confidence, it can also become a source of stress. Employees often have to navigate unspoken rules about what is considered appropriate, professional, or acceptable within their workplace. In contrast to written policy, appearance norms can be communicated through observing how others act and behave. An employee can observe how managers dress, how coworkers react to particular clothes, and how some workers get praised for their new look. However, there can be uncertainties. It is likely that some employees will feel compelled to look presentable enough to take them seriously, whereas others will think that it is too much to pay attention to one’s appearance.Workplace appearance shows that these pressures impact workers differently depending on gender. Women are likely to have more difficulties with appearance norms, at least partially because workplace assessment can be more complex when it comes to clothing and grooming.

Workplace culture decides what clothing means

An identical outfit can convey two distinct things based on the location at which it is worn. A bright jacket could be commonplace in a creative company but appear strange in an office for finance. That is the reason why appearances-based judgements are associated with the work culture. People continuously adjust themselves to the invisible codes around them, determining when it is required to conform and when to rebel. There are those who wear formal clothes because this allows them to feel ready for everything. Other people like wearing unusual things because this makes them stand out. None of these preferences mean anything about a person’s personality or abilities. The growing interest in the topic of workplace fashion proves that the issue of clothing still poses a challenging question. How it will be interpreted by others might depend on many factors including confidence and context.
