Willie Nelson is a legendary country music artist best known for hits like “On the Road Again” and his decades-long career spanning over 60 years in the entertainment industry. The 93-year-old musician has long been an advocate for environmental causes and farmer welfare, having founded the annual Farm Aid music festival in 1985 to support family-owned farms. Now Nelson is using his platform to stand up against what he views as a threat to his Texas roots, speaking out forcefully against the proposed development of data centers near Abbott, Texas, where he grew up and still maintains a home and farmland. In a social media post, Willie Nelson called out the proposed development of data centers in the Central Texas region, expressing deep concerns about their impact on the rural community. “To whom it may concern and to everyone else as well,” Nelson captioned his message before sharing his concerns about the impact of data centers on the area. “I grew up in Abbott, and I still have a home there with farmed land where I can still see stars at night. And now our community, like many others, needs to fight against data centers invading our land,” he wrote, reflecting on his personal connection to the land and his desire to preserve it.

Willie Nelson warns against environmental damage from data centers

Nelson expressed his frustration with the prospect of industrial development overtaking the rural landscape. “The last thing we need is a loud, water-thieving, light-polluting data center anywhere near our town (or any others for that matter),” he continued in his post. His words captured the environmental concerns many rural residents shared about the proposed facilities, which were reported by the Texas Tribune to number as many as 56 data centers in the Central Texas region.

The musician argued that rural America’s strength came from something far different than industrial infrastructure. “The strength of rural America has never come from big industrial footprints. It comes from generations of people, open spaces, local businesses, and a connection to the land,” he wrote, emphasising the values he believed should be preserved in communities like Abbott.

Nelson then turned his attention to what he viewed as the broader issue at stake: the preservation of farmland and natural resources. “All of America deserves thoughtful stewardship that doesn’t steal farmland (where our essential shared-food is grown) and small family farmers’ livelihoods, and not data centers that only destroy the environment around them,” he argued. His statement underscored his long-standing commitment to supporting family farmers and protecting agricultural land.

The musician concluded his message with a powerful warning: “Whoever controls food and water, controls the masses. Let’s not allow our own demise or give up control over necessary resources in the U.S. and especially in Abbott,” he wrote, framing the issue as one of fundamental importance to American independence and security.

Willie Nelson’s legacy of environmental and agricultural advocacy

Nelson’s new position was a response to issues that he had been fighting for for many years. He had always been dedicated to helping family farmers since the beginning of Farm Aid in 1985. Now 93 years old, Nelson remains active in his advocacy and music work activities, performing hundreds of live shows over the past 12 years and producing 21 studio albums. He is set to release his new book ‘The Last Leaf’ on November 10 from Penguin Random House, which will document his artistic career and his decades-long efforts to serve musical and social causes.
