R Madhavan has opened up about the three life lessons his parents instilled in him and how those values shaped not only his successful acting career but also his approach to parenting. In an interview with Mashable Middle East last year, the actor reflected on his upbringing, his father’s influence, and why he believes teaching children the right values matters more than always being physically present.
‘My parents taught me three principles’
Looking back at his childhood in Jamshedpur, Madhavan said he never had a detailed blueprint for his future, but the values his parents gave him became the foundation of everything he achieved.“If you ask me whether I had all these dreams while I was growing up in Jamshedpur, I’d say no. My dreams weren’t that specific. It’s impossible to map out every aspect of your life so early and know exactly how it will unfold,” he said.He recalled three principles that his parents repeatedly emphasised.“The first was: Never hurt anyone intentionally. That became my foundation. It probably made me a nicer person. When you’re nice to people, you acknowledge them. When you acknowledge them, they acknowledge you. That’s how genuine connections are built.”His second lesson revolved around financial integrity.“My parents always told me never to cheat anyone financially. If I borrowed money—even to tip someone—I had to return it. If a doctor who was a friend treated me for free, I still had to insist on paying because that’s his profession.”The third, he said, was to treat every person equally regardless of their social status.
‘Those values became my greatest management skills’
Madhavan believes these lessons translated directly into professional success.“People never forget someone who treats them with respect. Today, management schools call them ‘soft skills,’ but my parents taught me those values long before anyone used that term.”He added that good manners, honesty and respect helped him build meaningful relationships throughout his career.“Good manners, respect, honesty and social skills helped me build relationships. That’s how I met people like Nambi Narayanan. Whatever I’ve achieved happened because the right opportunity met the right preparation.”
Army upbringing shaped his discipline
The actor also credited his father’s Army background for instilling discipline and courtesy from an early age.“Army culture naturally teaches discipline and courtesy. Saying ‘Good morning, sir,’ ‘Good evening, ma’am,’ pulling out a chair, showing basic respect—these things become second nature.”According to Madhavan, such seemingly simple habits often take people much further in life than they realise.
‘I’m not the father who attends every school event’
Speaking about parenting, Madhavan said he has tried to pass on the same values to his son, Vedaant, who has made a name for himself as a competitive swimmer.While acknowledging that many parents today strive to spend more “quality time” with their children, the actor said he believes values matter more than constant physical presence.“My advice is simple—there will never be enough time. Don’t take your career lightly at this stage.”Calling the idea of always spending “quality time” with children a largely Western concept, Madhavan shared a conversation he once had with Vedaant when he was six years old.“When my son was about six, he once told me, ‘Papa, you don’t spend enough quality time with me.'”Madhavan recalled telling his son that his own father had rarely attended his school events, but was always there whenever he truly needed support.“I told Vedaant, ‘I’m not going to be the father who attends every school event because my profession doesn’t allow that. But if you ever need me, no matter what mistake you’ve made, I’m just one message away. I’ll always stand by you.'”The actor said he hopes he has given his son the confidence to approach him in any situation and added that he has “no regrets” about balancing his demanding career with parenthood.
