Engineers linked two deep wells through 629°F rock beneath Oregon’s Newberry volcano; the experiment could unlock round-the-clock power without burning fuel

Engineers linked two deep wells through 629°F rock beneath Oregon’s Newberry volcano; the experiment could unlock round-the-clock power without burning fuel

A Texas company has pulled off a major geothermal milestone beneath Newberry Volcano in central Oregon. Mazama Energy says it connected two deep wells through rock that reached 629 degrees Fahrenheit, or 331 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest enhanced geothermal system ever built anywhere in the world, as reported by AutoNotion. What makes the story unusual is not just the temperature, but the place. Newberry is an active volcano about 25 miles south of Bend, Oregon, and Mazama is trying to turn its buried heat into a reliable source of clean power.

    Why this matters

Geothermal energy has long been seen as promising but limited by geography. The hottest, most accessible rock is rare, and conventional geothermal projects often need very specific conditions to work well. Mazama’s Newberry project is notable because it shows that deep, superhot rock in the United States may be able to deliver far more energy than typical geothermal systems. The company is not stopping at the record. It plans three more wells at Newberry in 2026, targeting rock hotter than 400 degrees Celsius, a threshold that could change the economics of geothermal power.

    How the system works

The setup is straightforward in concept, even if the engineering is anything but simple. Mazama re-entered an older well and converted it into an injector, then drilled a new producer well nearby. Water goes down one well, moves through fractured hot rock, picks up heat and returns through the other well.According to the company, the two wells were aligned within six feet of the planned trajectory, and circulation tests confirmed that the reservoir was successfully opened and connected. Mazama used its Thermal Lattice stimulation method, along with tracers, fiber-optic lines and fracturing fluids, to map and maintain the reservoir,as per reports. The drilling itself was unusually fast and stable for rock this hot. Mazama says it reached peak drilling speeds of 100 feet per hour and did so without downhole motor or measurement failures, even at temperatures that would normally damage oilfield electronics.

    The bigger goal: Superhot rock

The company’s record setting result is not the final prize. Mazama is really aiming for what it calls “superhot rock,” meaning temperatures above 400 degrees Celsius. At that level, water can move into a supercritical state under pressure, carrying much more energy and potentially delivering far more power from each well.Mazama says that reaching this zone could bring several advantages: more power from fewer wells, less water use and lower costs over time. The company has suggested that superhot geothermal could eventually rival fossil-fuel economics if drilling and reservoir engineering keep improving. That is why this Oregon site has drawn so much attention. Newberry already has unusually hot rock at relatively shallow depths, with temperatures above 320 degrees Celsius reached around 3,000 meters down. In geothermal terms, that is a major head start.

    A volcano with history

Newberry is not a quiet mountain. It is the largest volcano in the Cascades arc and has been classified by the U.S. Geological Survey as active and very high threat. It last erupted about 1,300 years ago, and it still has hot springs, young lava flows and background seismic activity. That does not mean the geothermal project is making the volcano more dangerous. USGS monitoring has tracked the site for years, including earlier geothermal work that produced small earthquakes. The agency said it did not expect the Mazama project to change the volcano’s activity or hazard picture. In other words, the volcano is already monitored closely, and the energy project is being layered onto a site scientists know well. That combination makes Newberry unusually valuable for geothermal development, even if it sounds intimidating at first glance.

    What comes next

Mazama’s 2026 plan is ambitious. The company says it will drill an observation well first, followed by an injection well and then a production well. The goal is to move from a successful two-well demonstration to a larger pilot that could generate around 15 to 20 megawatts of net power. That would not power a huge hyperscale data center campus on its own, but it would be a significant step toward proving the concept. If the system performs as expected, Mazama believes it could scale much further at Newberry. The observation well, known as Project Athena, is meant to collect data and help shape the hotter wells that follow. The company says it is also testing the possibility of drilling with supercritical carbon dioxide, a method that could keep tools cool enough to survive in superhot rock.

Why this is a big deal for clean power

The excitement around Newberry is not just about one company or one volcano. It is about whether geothermal can become a much bigger player in the clean-energy mix. Unlike solar and wind, geothermal can run around the clock, which makes it especially attractive for power-hungry users such as utilities and data centers. If engineers can reliably tap superhot rock, they may be able to produce more electricity from smaller projects and with fewer wells. That would make geothermal more competitive in places that were previously considered too expensive or too difficult to develop.Mazama is not alone either. Other companies, including Quaise Energy, are also developing superhot geothermal projects near Newberry, which suggests the region could become a serious proving ground for the next wave of geothermal technology.
