Phil Collins gets candid about his bout with alcoholism
In the recent years, Collins dealt with alcoholism, which almost took his life away. While talking to The Sunday Times in a recent interview, the singer shared that at one point of his life, he was on the brink of death because of alcohol. He used to drink to the point that he even had to be hospitalized in November 2023.Providing more information about what happened, Collins shared, “There were some decisions to be made about ‘Do we keep Phil on life support?’ kind of thing. My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up. People were coming to say goodbye. But I don’t remember them coming, I didn’t have no idea this was going on. They were all worried that they wouldn’t see me again. It could all have gone so terribly wrong.”Being in the hospital for around 7 months was a big wake up call for him, and prompted him to completely give up on alcohol. He added, “I was very lucky to have come out of that. Needless to say, I haven’t had a drink since.”In another interview which he had with The Rolling Stone, the singer revealed that he had a hard time dealing with his divorce from Orianne Cevey in 2006. This had also led him into one of the darkest parts of his life where he heavily depended on alcohol. He shared during the interview, “It left me with a lot of time on my hands to think about what happened. I went through a few bits of darkness; drinking too much. I killed my hours watching TV and drinking, and it almost killed me. But I haven’t had a drink in three years.”Other than dealing with alcoholism, over the years the musician has been quite open about some of the health issues that he has been dealing with over the years. From being diagnosed with diabetes in 2016 to suffering from neck and spinal injuries, he has remained open about all. Currently, because of this specific issue, Collins is unable to properly play the drums. Talking about the same to The Guardian in 2021, the singer had commented about how his health heavily affects how he approaches music. He had been on tour for a reunion with Genesis; however, he was unable to play the drums. He had commented about his situation, saying that, “Of course, my health does change things; doing the show seated changes things. But I actually found on my recent solo tours, it didn’t get in the way; the audience was still listening and responding. It’s not the way I would have written it, but it’s the way that it is.”Phil Collins is known as one of the most popular and pioneering names in the music industry.
