While filming the 1983 martial arts comedy Project A, a stunt performer stood at the edge of a clock tower, looking down at a drop of more than 15 metres. Below him were only thin canvas awnings meant to soften the fall. The man was Jackie Chan. He made the jump, crashed through the awnings, landed on his neck, and seriously injured his cervical spine.He survived, recovered, and later performed the stunt again to get the exact shot he wanted. There were no digital safety wires to remove later, no chance to change his path while falling, and no computer-generated effects to protect him.Years later, in his 2018 memoir Never Grow Up (co-written with Zhu Mo and translated into English by Thorsten Boose), Chan reflected on a career built around real physical danger:“You don’t get to do over parts or go back and change your path. Your life is decided by your character and the decisions you make in the moment.” His words challenge the idea that life offers endless second chances. Modern culture often focuses on looking back, rewriting stories, or editing mistakes. Real life does not work that way. The choices people make under pressure, shaped by their habits and values, become a permanent part of their lives.
From the China drama academy to international fame
Jackie Chan’s outlook was shaped by an environment where mistakes had immediate physical consequences. Born Chan Kong-sang in Hong Kong in 1954, he entered the China Drama Academy at the age of seven. The school, run by Master Yu Jim-yuen, trained children in Peking Opera through a strict and demanding routine.For ten years, Chan spent up to 19 hours a day practising acrobatics, martial arts, and stage performance. Discipline was strict, and corporal punishment was common.Getting a stunt or flip wrong often resulted in immediate physical pain. There was little room for hesitation, mistakes, or excuses.When Chan joined Hong Kong’s film industry as a stuntman in the early 1970s, working on Bruce Lee films such as Fist of Fury (1972) and Enter the Dragon (1973), action movies relied heavily on real stunts. Stunt performers earned modest pay while taking serious physical risks.By the time Chan published Never Grow Up in 2018 at the age of 64, his body carried lasting reminders of that career. He had a plastic plate in his skull after a near-fatal fall during the filming of Armour of God (1986), a badly broken ankle from Rumble in the Bronx (1995), and many other broken bones.Rather than celebrating only his success, the memoir offers an honest and often self-critical look at his personal mistakes, weaknesses, and career decisions. Chan explains that while a film director can shout “cut” and restart a scene, people must live with every decision they make.

This idea lies at the heart of Aristotle’s virtue ethics. In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle argued that good character is not something people simply think about. Instead, it is built through repeated actions and habits over time.When people face a crisis, they do not have time to create a new moral code. Instead, they react according to the habits and values they have already developed.Whether on a movie set, a battlefield, or inside an emergency room, fast decisions usually reflect years of experience and deeply formed character.Modern behavioural economics supports this view. Psychologist Daniel Kahneman’s dual-process theory describes two ways of thinking: System 1, which is fast and instinctive, and System 2, which is slower and more deliberate.During emergencies, there is often no time for careful analysis. People rely mainly on System 1, which draws on long-practised habits, experience, and patterns built through years of everyday decisions.
The lasting impact of high-stakes decisions

National Transportation Safety Board investigations show that many emergency outcomes are decided within seconds. When Captain Chesley Sullenberger safely landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in 2009 after both engines failed following bird strikes, he had less than three minutes to make a decision.The successful landing was not simply good luck. It was the result of four decades of flying experience, disciplined training, and calm judgment applied during a situation that allowed no second chance.Living without a rewind button means accepting that every decision leaves a permanent mark. Although past mistakes cannot be undone, the character people bring to the next important moment remains fully within their control.
